The White Peaks (Gagar, Nainital) (Gagar)

The White Peaks is a 2-bedroom private cottage in the Himalayan hamlet of Gagar, near Ramgarh, Nainital - owned by Aparupa and Abhijit Ganguly, a Bengali couple who found their calling in the hills. Their own description is precise: "We are not just pet-friendly, we are pet-loving." The resident adopted dog Kali - described by multiple reviewers as "the cutest, cuddliest doggo" - is the first indicator that this is a home where dogs are genuinely welcomed rather than tolerated. Pets are accepted at no extra charge - a rarity among Kumaon stays - which removes the financial negotiation that complicates booking at most properties in the region.

The cottage sits at 7,500 feet, surrounded on three sides by silver oak and rhododendron forest, with a courtyard that offers 180-degree views of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks. On clear days, Trishul and Nanda Devi are visible. Caretakers Mohan and Pawan do the cooking - local non-veg dishes in Kumaoni style are specifically praised, with one reviewer (a hotelier themselves) describing the food as "beyond awesome." A working fireplace in the living area, an outdoor dining setup, and a book collection make extended stays - 3 nights or more - feel genuinely comfortable rather than merely bearable, which matters when travelling with a dog who needs consistency across days.

Getting there - the uphill walk matters

There is no vehicle access to the cottage. The approach is a 10-minute moderate uphill walk from where vehicles park (near the village shops, where shopkeepers watch cars). Pack light, or inform the property in advance - staff assist with luggage but the walk with heavy bags is a genuine consideration. For dogs, the uphill walk on arrival and departure is part of the experience rather than an inconvenience. Mohan and Pawan receive consistent praise for making the approach feel assisted rather than abandoned.
