Highest Direct Fall in Uttarakhand

๐พDogs Welcome
Confirmed on Trail + at Falls
Tiger Falls โ locally known as Keraao Pachad โ drops 312 feet in a single direct plunge, making it the highest direct waterfall in Uttarakhand, and one of the most dramatic in the entire Himalayan foothills. It sits 20 km from Chakrata town on the Chakrata-Lakhamandal road, at an elevation of 1,395 metres, reached by a 1 km downhill trek through dense deodar and oak forest from the road. The name comes from the waterfall's roar โ audible before you can see it โ that reportedly once startled a tiger resting at the base.
The falls collect in a natural pool at the base โ big enough to wade and swim in when conditions allow โ and the mist from the 312-foot drop creates a permanently cool microclimate at the bottom even in summer. One reviewer described a rainbow formation above the pool, crystal-clear water, and the bone-chilling cold of the mountain mist โ which is as accurate a description of the experience as you'll find. Another mentioned the silence of the deodar forest on the way down, interrupted only by the sound of the falls growing louder through the trees.
๐พ Tails Verified โ what we confirmed
Dogs are welcome on the trail and at the falls โ no gates, no entry restrictions, no breed or size requirements. The 1 km trek down is manageable for most dogs: a forested descent on a maintained path that a family reviewer described as "suitable for all ages." The pool at the base is fed by the falls; dogs can wade in the shallower edges. The cold, misty environment at the bottom is genuinely refreshing for dogs even in warm weather.
Two ways to reach the falls
Option 1 โ by road + short trek: Drive 20 km from Chakrata on the Lakhamandal road. The last 2 km are unpaved and rough โ SUVs and high-clearance vehicles handle this better than sedans. Parking fits around 10 vehicles. Entry fee is approximately โน30 per person (โน40 for parking). From the parking area, it is a 1 km downhill trek on a well-maintained path to the falls.
Option 2 โ full forest trek: 5โ6 km trek from Chakrata town through forest, hamlets, and terraced fields with snow-mountain views. This is the option multiple reviewers call more rewarding โ "you can eat freshly grown peas on your way" is one specific detail that comes up โ but it adds significant distance and is only suitable for physically fit dogs comfortable on forest trails.
The Chakrata context
Chakrata is a cantonment town โ foreigners require a permit to visit, but Indian nationals and their pets are free to come. It sits at around 2,118 metres in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand, 90 km from Dehradun, and is significantly less developed than Mussoorie. The road from Dehradun to Chakrata is "completely different from Mussoorie hill drive" according to one Tripadvisor reviewer โ "many turns but safe, much better," with views of forested ridges rather than the commercial strip of the Mussoorie road.
What to know before the trek
No food shops at the waterfall itself โ carry food and water. A small canteen near the parking has biscuits and cold drinks; one much-mentioned old man makes tea and Maggi at a tiny stall near the falls. Bring a spare set of clothes and a towel if you or your dog intend to get wet in the pool. Bathing was temporarily restricted after a recent accident at the time of some reviews โ confirm current status locally before planning the pool as the main event. The return trek is uphill โ budget more time going back than coming down, especially with dogs who may tire on the climb.
