Dehradun with Apple, Captain and Kimchi — The Stay That Took 4 Days to Find

Four days. That is how long it took to find a pet friendly stay in Dehradun on a summer holiday weekend. Every halfway decent property either said no to dogs, allowed "small dogs only" (Apple is not small), or had no availability at all. One property confirmed on the phone, sent us a booking link, and reversed it the next morning. Another had a pet policy on their website that their actual front desk had never heard of. We were close to giving up and rerouting to somewhere we already knew.

The destination itself was not the problem. The new Delhi-Dehradun Expressway had just opened and suddenly Dehradun was under five hours from Gurgaon. Every pet parent in Delhi NCR had the same idea at the same time. The city was booked out.

Stairway To Heaven

On day four we found Stairway To Heaven on Mussoorie Road in Rajpur, Dehradun. A privately bookable 2BHK villa on the Mussoorie Highway with a fenced garden, valley views, a chef and caretaker on site, and a host who actually picked up the phone and gave us a straight answer: yes, all three dogs welcome, ₹500 flat for the day, no per-dog charge. We booked it that evening and left the next morning.

The expressway — and the one thing nobody tells you

We left Gurgaon in the evening. The new expressway is genuinely fast — smooth, wide, access-controlled. The old NH-58 through Meerut and Muzaffarnagar could take 6-7 hours in bad traffic. This was 4.5 hours including a stop. One thing nobody tells you clearly enough: there are no fuel stations on the expressway. None. We had filled up at Gurgaon. If you are planning this drive, do the same — fill completely before entering, wherever you join it.

Around the 90km mark the dogs needed out. We stopped at Shahi Baithak on the NH-75 corridor — a brand new dhaba, about a month old when we visited. Large open ground, enough space for all three to walk, sniff and sort themselves out. We got sandwiches. The staff had zero issue with the dogs. It is the only stop we can confirm on this route going toward Dehradun — save it in your maps before you leave.

Midnight arrival

We arrived at Stairway To Heaven just before midnight. Badal was waiting — he had the villa open, came straight to the car to help with the bags, and greeted all three dogs without hesitation. At midnight, after a 4.5-hour drive, that matters more than it sounds.

The villa is on the Mussoorie Road in Khala Gaon, elevated enough for valley views from every room. The fenced backyard garden was the first thing Apple, Captain and Kimchi found. It was dark, but that did not stop them. Blinkit delivered dog food to the door ten minutes later.

Day two — Maldevta Picnic Point

The next morning we drove to Maldevta Picnic Point, about 18km from Dehradun, where the Song River runs shallow and gentle over a wide stony bed. Apple was in the water within minutes — he swam properly, the way he does whenever there's enough depth to actually paddle. Captain waded to his knees and stayed there, happy. Kimchi found a shallow pool near the bank and sat in it like a bath.

The water in June was mild, not the shock-cold of a mountain lake, and the morning sun was gentle enough that nobody needed shade yet. None of them needed convincing to get in — the gradual slope into the river does that work for you.

Right next to the riverbank is Manbhawan River Resort — a café with a sitting area overlooking the water, parking, and a washroom where you can change out of wet clothes for ₹10. They deliver food straight to the riverside too — we ordered tea and Maggi and stayed far longer than planned. The spot gets crowded by midday, so the early start was worth it. Maldevta closes during monsoon, so this is strictly a clear-season visit.

The return — and one more stop

We left at 12:32 AM for the drive back. At 2:48 AM we pulled into Jaldi Road Diner near Bijrol on the expressway. The food court is under construction — no food available — but the facility is well-lit, the washrooms are clean, and there is large open ground for the dogs. We were back on the road by 3:04 AM. On a 3 AM expressway drive, that is exactly what you need.
