Four days. That is how long it took to find a pet friendly stay in Dehradun on a summer holiday weekend. Every halfway decent property either said no to dogs, allowed "small dogs only" (Apple is not small), or had no availability at all. One property confirmed on the phone, sent us a booking link, and reversed it the next morning. Another had a pet policy on their website that their actual front desk had never heard of. We were close to giving up and rerouting to somewhere we already knew.
The destination itself was not the problem. The new Delhi-Dehradun Expressway had just opened and suddenly Dehradun was under five hours from Gurgaon. Every pet parent in Delhi NCR had the same idea at the same time. The city was booked out.
Stairway To Heaven
On day four we found Stairway To Heaven on Mussoorie Road in Rajpur, Dehradun. A privately bookable 2BHK villa on the Mussoorie Highway with a fenced garden, valley views, a chef and caretaker on site, and a host who actually picked up the phone and gave us a straight answer: yes, all three dogs welcome, βΉ500 flat for the day, no per-dog charge. We booked it that evening and left the next morning.
The expressway β and the one thing nobody tells you
We left Gurgaon in the evening. The new expressway is genuinely fast β smooth, wide, access-controlled. The old NH-58 through Meerut and Muzaffarnagar could take 6-7 hours in bad traffic. This was 4.5 hours including a stop. One thing nobody tells you clearly enough: there are no fuel stations on the expressway. None. We had filled up at Gurgaon. If you are planning this drive, do the same β fill completely before entering, wherever you join it.
Around the 90km mark the dogs needed out. We stopped at Shahi Baithak on the NH-75 corridor β a brand new dhaba, about a month old when we visited. Large open ground, enough space for all three to walk, sniff and sort themselves out. We got sandwiches. The staff had zero issue with the dogs. It is the only stop we can confirm on this route going toward Dehradun β save it in your maps before you leave.
Midnight arrival
We arrived at Stairway To Heaven just before midnight. Badal was waiting β he had the villa open, came straight to the car to help with the bags, and greeted all three dogs without hesitation. At midnight, after a 4.5-hour drive, that matters more than it sounds.
The villa is on the Mussoorie Road in Khala Gaon, elevated enough for valley views from every room. The fenced backyard garden was the first thing Apple, Captain and Kimchi found. It was dark, but that did not stop them. Blinkit delivered dog food to the door ten minutes later.
Song River
The next day we drove to Song River near Dehradun β a shallow river bank with a cafe on site. The river is shallow enough for dogs to wade and swim safely. All three were in within minutes. The location gets crowded on weekends β go early or on a weekday if you can.
The return β and one more stop
We left at 12:32 AM for the drive back. At 2:48 AM we pulled into Jaldi Road Diner near Bijrol on the expressway. The food court is under construction β no food available β but the facility is well-lit, the washrooms are clean, and there is large open ground for the dogs. We were back on the road by 3:04 AM. On a 3 AM expressway drive, that is exactly what you need.

Fill up before the expressway β both ways
There are no operational fuel stations on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway in either direction. Fill your tank completely at Gurgaon going up and at Dehradun going back. Do not assume you will find fuel mid-route.
Book Stairway To Heaven directly
Call ahead and confirm the pet policy before booking. The host is responsive and gives straight answers. Request the villa with the fenced backyard garden β essential if your dog is large or active.
Song River is best on weekdays
The river is shallow and dog-friendly but gets very crowded on weekends. Large dogs need space to move freely β weekdays or early morning visits give you that.
Blinkit works here
Stairway To Heaven is close enough to Dehradun city for Blinkit and Zomato delivery. We ordered dog food at midnight and it arrived in 10 minutes. Pack food anyway but this is a genuine backup option in the mountains.
Drive the return leg at night
Leaving Dehradun late means you hit Gurgaon in the early hours β before the morning traffic builds. The expressway is smooth and the dogs sleep the whole way. Jaldi Road Diner at 3 AM is a reliable stop.
Carry your own water and food for the highway
Both Shahi Baithak (outward) and Jaldi Road Diner (return) have limited or no food. Pack enough water for the dogs for the full journey plus one extra litre. Rest stop infrastructure on this expressway is still being built.
