Delhi to Dehradun with Dogs — Pet Friendly Road Trip on the New Expressway
The fastest way to reach Dehradun with your dog is now open
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has changed this drive completely. What used to be a 6-7 hour grind through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee is now 4 to 4.5 hours on a smooth, access-controlled 210 km highway. For pet parents in Delhi and Gurgaon, this opens up Dehradun and Mussoorie as genuine weekend destinations.
We drove this route in June 2026 with Apple (Golden Retriever), Captain (Indie), and Kimchi (Black Retriever). Here is everything you need to know before you leave.
⛽ Critical: Fill your tank before entering the expressway
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway currently has no operational fuel stations on its main stretch. This is not a rumour — rest area infrastructure is still being built at most locations. Fill your tank completely at Gurgaon or Delhi before you enter. If you are driving an EV, there are no charging points yet either. Plan accordingly.
The route from Gurgaon
From Gurgaon, take NH-48 north toward Delhi, then pick up the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. The highway passes through Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli, and Saharanpur before entering Uttarakhand and terminating near Dehradun. U-turns are only possible at designated interchange points — no median crossings.
The road is genuinely fast. Most of the journey is smooth and the expressway bypasses all the congested towns that made the old NH-58 miserable. Expect some city traffic once you enter Dehradun.
With dogs in the car
Two hours in, your dogs will need a break. There is currently very limited infrastructure on the expressway, but we found one working pet-friendly stop — Shahi Baithak on the NH-75 corridor near Gogwan Jalalpur. Large open ground, dogs can get out, North Indian food for the humans. Details on the stop below.
Stops along the way
Your only confirmed pet-friendly break on the expressway. Large open ground — let the dogs out, stretch legs, refuel yourselves. No petrol available anywhere on this highway so this stop is for food and dog breaks only. North Indian menu.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway pet friendly? The expressway itself is just a road — what matters is where you can stop. Current infrastructure is limited with rest areas still under construction. We confirmed one pet-friendly stop: Shahi Baithak near Gogwan Jalalpur. Stairway To Heaven at the destination is TAILS_VERIFIED.
How long does the drive take with dogs? Plan for 4.5 to 5 hours including one stop for the dogs. The expressway section is fast but add time for a 20-30 minute break mid-route and Dehradun city traffic at the end.
Are there fuel stations on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway? No. As of June 2026 there are no operational fuel stations on the main expressway stretch. Fill your tank completely before entering — either at Gurgaon or on the Delhi side. Do not assume you will find fuel mid-route.
Is Mussoorie accessible from Dehradun? Yes — Mussoorie is approximately 30 minutes from Rajpur, Dehradun where Stairway To Heaven is located. The Rajpur Road connects Dehradun to Mussoorie directly.
What is the best time to drive Delhi to Dehradun with dogs? October to March is ideal — cooler temperatures mean dogs are comfortable in the car and at the destination. Summer (May-July) is crowded and hot. Monsoon (July-September) brings beautiful views but landslide risk near Dehradun.
