Rishikesh has a reputation as a spiritual, adventure, and yoga destination. What it does not have a reputation for — but genuinely should — is being one of the more accessible Uttarakhand towns for dogs if you know which properties to book and which parts of the town to use.

This guide covers every verified pet-friendly place in Rishikesh currently on our platform, the honest realities of the town for dogs, and what we are still looking for.

Current verified listings in Rishikesh: 3 Team Verified stays (all Hosteller properties). All verified via direct phone call and confirmed against thehosteller.com FAQ. No unverified listings included.

The One Rule That Changes Everything

All three Hosteller Rishikesh properties share the same pet policy. Read this before booking anything:

Private rooms only. No exceptions. Pets are welcome in private rooms. Pets are strictly not allowed in dorms. No extra charges. Management reserves right of admission. If you book a dorm bed and arrive with a dog, you will be turned away. Book a private room. Confirm at booking. Reconfirm on arrival.

This is not a minor detail. It is the difference between a trip that works and one that does not. We surface this on every listing page and in every guide because we have heard from enough pet parents who discovered this rule at check-in.

The Three Verified Stays

The Hosteller Rishikesh, Ganges

Location: Dharam Yatri Niwas, Laxman Jhula area. 4.7 stars, 5,500+ reviews. This property sits directly on the Ganges. The sound of the river is constant. If proximity to the water matters — for you and for your dog's morning routine — this is the one to book. Walking distance to the Laxman Jhula suspension bridge area. Pet charges: free.

The Hosteller Rishikesh, Laxman Jhula

Location: Near Teri Manzil Temple, Laxman Jhula. 4.8 stars, 370+ reviews. The most central of the three — closest to the cafes, the market, and the main foot traffic areas of the east bank. Good if you want to be in the middle of things while still having a private room for your dog. Pet charges: free.

The Hosteller Rishikesh, Upper Tapovan

Location: Khasra No. 137, Balaknath Road, Upper Tapovan. 4.7 stars, 7,200+ reviews. The largest property and the one with the most organic reviews. Elevated location on the west bank above the river. Quieter than the Laxman Jhula side. The forest trails behind Tapovan are accessible from here — good for morning walks away from crowds. Pet charges: free.

What Works for Dogs in Rishikesh

The Ganges river banks — early morning. Before 7 AM, the pebble banks downstream from Laxman Jhula are quiet. Clean water in this stretch. Dogs who love water will be completely happy. This is the best part of Rishikesh for dogs. Time your mornings around it.

Forest trails behind Upper Tapovan. Wide dirt tracks through light forest on the west bank. Very few people early morning. Ask the Hosteller Upper Tapovan staff for current trail conditions — the network shifts seasonally and after monsoon.

The residential side streets. Away from the main tourist circuits, Rishikesh has quiet lane networks that are perfectly walkable with a calm dog. Evening walks through these areas — after the tourist rush settles — work well.

What Does Not Work for Dogs

The bridge zones. Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula are pedestrian suspension bridges that get extremely crowded. Not prohibited for dogs but genuinely difficult — narrow, crowded, with monkeys on the railings.

Rhesus macaques. Rishikesh has a significant monkey population around temple areas and the bridge zones. Keep dogs on leash near any monkey congregation. Most dogs who have never encountered macaques react with high excitement or aggression — either is dangerous near a large group. The river banks and forest trails have far fewer monkeys.

Most ashrams and yoga centres. Dogs are not welcome. Do not attempt entry.

The main market during peak hours. Very crowded, narrow lanes. Fine for confident dogs with good urban socialisation. Difficult for anxious or reactive dogs.

What We Are Still Verifying

Several camping operators along the Ganges claim to be pet-friendly. We are in the process of calling each one to confirm the actual policy — what pet-friendly means for a tent camp is different from what it means for a hostel. We will add confirmed listings as we verify them.

If you have stayed at a pet-friendly camp, cafe, or restaurant in Rishikesh that we have not listed: submit it here → Our team will call to verify the policy and add it to the platform.
