Drive time: 5.5–6 hours via NH58 (Meerut–Haridwar–Dehradun)
Best stop en route: Village Food Courts, EPE (35 km) → Haridwar bypass (200 km)
Best season: October–March (cool, clear Himalayan views)
Avoid: Peak summer weekends (May–June) — Mall Road gridlock
Delhi to Mussoorie is 290 km and one of the most driven hill station routes from the capital. For dog owners, the trip requires two decisions that make or break the experience: which part of Mussoorie to stay in (Landour, not Mall Road), and when to go (not peak season weekends). Get these two right and Mussoorie works well for dogs. Get them wrong and it is a stressful trip that does not need to be.
The Route
From Delhi or Gurugram, take the EPE northbound. First stop: Village Food Courts at 35 km — the green lawn stop that works as a decompression point for dogs coming out of city traffic. Continue on NH9 through Muzaffarnagar, then follow NH334 through Roorkee and Haridwar to Dehradun. From Dehradun, it is the 14-km winding climb to Mussoorie.
There is no second verified highway stop specifically on the Delhi-Mussoorie route beyond the EPE. Dehradun city has options for a dog break — the roads entering Dehradun have some green shoulder areas — but nothing as specifically verified as Kundan's on the Corbett/Rishikesh route. Budget an extra break at a petrol station with open ground around the Muzaffarnagar area.
The Peak Season Weekend Jam — The Most Important Planning Note
The 14-km road from Dehradun to Mussoorie is a single-lane mountain road for much of its length. On peak season weekends — particularly from April to June and on major holiday weekends — this road jams completely. Cars queue for 2 hours to cover 14 km. You are sitting in traffic on a winding hill road with a dog in a hot car, going nowhere.
The fix is simple: arrive on a Thursday evening or very early Friday morning. The road is completely clear. The same applies to the return — leave Sunday afternoon or Monday rather than Sunday evening when the traffic reverses.
Where to Stay — Landour, Not Mall Road
The single most important decision for a dog owner in Mussoorie. Landour is the cantonment area above Mall Road. It is quieter, the roads are wider, there are proper stone-paved walking paths, and the cultural vibe is more relaxed. The famous Char Dukan area in Landour is a handful of old tea shops on a lane wide enough to sit with a large dog.
Mall Road is fine early morning on a weekday. On a weekend afternoon in season, it is dense, narrow, and difficult with a dog who is not fully comfortable in very crowded urban environments.

What to Do with Dogs in Mussoorie
Landour morning walks. The upper lanes above Char Dukan toward Lal Tibba are quiet early morning. Stone paths, wide enough for a dog, excellent Himalayan views when clear.
Camel's Back Road. A 3-km walking loop on the Mussoorie ridge. Quieter than Mall Road, with good views and enough space to walk with a large dog without constant crowd navigation.
Gun Hill (cable car). Dogs are not permitted on the cable car. The walk up is possible with a dog and gives you the views without the cable car queue.
Best Season
October to March. November and December are particularly good — clear skies, Himalayan visibility, quiet roads. January brings snow possibility at Mussoorie's 2,000m elevation — bring a dog coat for any dog who feels cold.
Avoid July to September (monsoon, landslide risk on the Dehradun-Mussoorie road). Full seasonal context: Monsoon Travel with Dogs India →
