Bhimtal, tucked away in the Kumaon foothills of Uttarakhand, is the quieter, more peaceful cousin to its tourist-heavy neighbor, Nainital, which is just 22 km away. At 1370m above sea level, it offers cool, serene weather for most of the year, making it an excellent spot for pet-friendly getaways. The town's centerpiece is the stunning Bhimtal Lake, with its glassy water and forested surroundings. For anyone travelling with a dog or cat, Bhimtal's calmer vibe is a big plus. You won’t have the overcrowded streets or relentless honking that can set off a nervous pet.
The terrain is classic Kumaon: rolling hills, pine forests, and idyllic lakeshores. This is a great spot if your dog loves sniffing along forest trails or paddling in the water, with areas like Naukuchiatal and Sattal offering plenty of natural exploration. While there’s some development in town, it’s much more relaxed than the chaos of larger hill stations. You can easily find quiet stretches near the lake or forest trails above the town, perfect for roaming with your four-legged companion.
Climate-wise, Bhimtal is incredibly pet-friendly. The temperatures in October through June hover between 10–22°C, which means your dog won’t be panting away in the heat like they might in the plains. Monsoon months from July to September can be trickier due to heavy rains that occasionally disrupt roads and increase safety concerns for travel with pets. Whether you’re planning a lakeside picnic or just want a snoozy weekend retreat with your dog by your side, Bhimtal offers a little slice of tranquility for both you and your pet.
Travelling to Bhimtal with your pet is relatively straightforward, though a little planning goes a long way. Driving to Bhimtal from Delhi is the most convenient option if you’re bringing along your furry companion. The drive is about 5.5–6.5 hours via NH24, passing through Ghaziabad, Moradabad, and Haldwani. The highway itself is well-maintained up to Haldwani, but the last 20 km involve winding hill roads, which can cause motion sickness in some pets. If your dog is prone to nausea, make sure to feed them lightly a few hours before the drive and carry anti-nausea medication, just in case. Pack enough water, as finding roadside stops catering to pets is rare beyond Kathgodam.
If driving isn’t an option, the nearest train station is Kathgodam, about 23 km from Bhimtal. Indian Railways doesn’t allow pets in most passenger compartments unless you book the entire coupe in 1st AC, so plan accordingly. Once you reach Kathgodam, cabs to Bhimtal are easy to hire, but do inform the cab operator in advance that you’re travelling with a pet. Larger dogs may require an SUV or roomy car, especially if you travel with a carrier or bedding.
The final leg from Kathgodam to Bhimtal takes around 45–60 minutes by car. While the roads are generally in good condition, do note that hill drives can be bumpy in some stretches. Plan frequent breaks for your pet’s comfort, especially if they’re small or elderly. During monsoon months, drive times can increase due to road closures, so it’s safer to travel during daylight hours. Overall, travelling to Bhimtal with your pet is doable with some preparation and the right mindset.
Bhimtal is generally a safe hill station for pets, but there are a few specific hazards to watch out for. First, monkeys in forested areas and around Bhimtal Lake can be aggressive if they see you holding food. If you’re walking your dog near these spots, keep snacks securely packed in your bag, and don’t let your dog bark or lunge at the monkeys. They can get territorial quickly.
Monsoon season (July–September) is another significant safety factor. Hill roads near Bhimtal and Bhowali often face landslides or closures due to heavy rainfall, which can make last-minute detours unavoidable. If you’re driving during the monsoon, always check road conditions beforehand. Avoid driving to Bhimtal at night or in poor weather during these months—flooded or damaged roads pose a serious risk.
If you’re venturing into forest trails or Sattal Lake, keep your dog leashed, especially in areas with dense vegetation. Local wildlife, including wild boars and jackals, is generally shy but may venture closer during early mornings or late evenings. Avoid trail walks at these hours, and carry a flashlight for safety.
Ticks can also be an issue, particularly on the forested paths of Upper Bhimtal or Naukuchiatal. Be sure to inspect your dog’s fur after every outdoor outing. Use a vet-recommended tick repellent before starting your trip, and pack tweezers and antiseptic wipes to deal with any ticks you might find. With the right precautions, Bhimtal is both beautiful and safe for a pet-friendly getaway.
The central hub of Bhimtal is the lake area itself, which is ideal if you prefer easy access to pet-friendly walks. The lakeside path offers a mix of paved and earthen trails, making it suitable for dogs of all sizes. Early mornings here are quite peaceful, but it can get a bit busier in the afternoon with visitors and boating activity. Luckily, it’s still far less chaotic than Nainital’s lakeside.
Just 9 km from Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal feels even more secluded. This lake has grassy shores and gentle inclines, making it a great spot for dogs to stretch their legs. There’s less commercial activity here compared to Bhimtal Lake, so it’s a wonderful area for nervous pets who dislike crowds. The surrounding hills also have quiet trails for leashed walks.
About 22 km from Bhimtal, Sattal is a collection of serene lakes surrounded by forests. One of the lakes here is especially popular for dog swimming because of its easy access banks. The forest trails around Sattal are mesmerizing but can be tricky for small dogs due to uneven terrain. It’s also best avoided during monsoon when trails become slippery.
While mostly a transit point, Bhowali (a short drive from Bhimtal) has small tea plantations and quiet forested areas that your dog will love. It’s less developed than Bhimtal itself, and perfect for a relaxed, no-pressure outing. The uphill stretches may tire out smaller dogs, so plan routes accordingly.
For a more adventurous outing, the forest trails above Bhimtal town provide panoramic views and solitude. These trails are best for leashed walks as they can be steep, and there’s always a chance of running into wildlife. A good option for travelers with active breeds who enjoy longer hikes.
The town’s primary attraction, Bhimtal Lake, offers scenic walks along its banks. Dogs will enjoy the mix of forested sections and open pathways. Boating is available, though pets are rarely allowed on the boats—check with operators beforehand. The area around the lake is relatively clean, but keep an eye out for food wrappers that stray dogs might gather around.
Sattal is one of the best places in the area if your dog enjoys swimming. The calmer, quieter vibe here compared to Bhimtal means fewer distractions, and the gently sloping banks make water access easy for pets. The forests around Sattal are also full of bird calls and fresh earthy smells, which are pure joy for dogs.
This quiet lake is perfect for pets, with grassy shores that are great for picnics or just hanging out. The area’s tranquility makes it ideal for senior dogs or pets who prefer low-key environments. Look out for locals fishing on the lake, but don’t let your dog venture too close to their lines.
This smaller, peaceful lake is a short drive from Bhimtal and an underappreciated gem. The serenity here is unmatched, and it’s rarely crowded, giving your pet ample space to explore. There are no organized activities, but it’s an ideal spot for a quiet lakeside walk.
While you can’t bring your pet directly to the island restaurant without prior permission, you can grab a snack at one of the small cafés on the shoreline while your pet chills by the lake. It’s a good compromise if you want something quick to eat without leaving your dog behind.
Though primarily an attraction for humans, the zoo in Nainital is worth a mention if you’re planning a pet-free excursion while your dog rests at the hotel. It’s not pet-friendly, but its proximity to Bhimtal makes it convenient.

The best time to visit Bhimtal with your pets is between October and June. The weather during these months is cool and comfortable, with temperatures between 10–22°C. For dog owners in particular, this means you can plan long walks and outdoor activities without worrying about heat exhaustion or paw burns. Winter months (December–February) can get chilly at night, so carry extra bedding for your pet if you’re staying in a less well-heated hotel.
May and early June are especially lovely for those escaping the plains’ heat. Bhimtal is usually 10–15°C cooler than Delhi, and the clear skies make it perfect for those planning day hikes or lakeside outings. However, this is also the start of the tourist season, so weekends may be busier.
It’s best to avoid visiting during the monsoon (July–September). Bhimtal, like many hill stations in Uttarakhand, experiences heavy rains that can lead to slippery paths, road closures, and extended travel times. Even pets find it difficult to enjoy the outdoors during this season, as there’s a higher chance of ticks, damp bedding, and restricted movement.
