Gurgaon to Jabalpur with Dogs: 850km, One Overnight Drive, and Apple's First Nani Ghar Visit

We left Gurgaon at 5:26pm on 29 July 2026. Apple took the backseat with the authority of a dog who has done this many times. Kimchi, on her first overnight road trip, was at the window immediately. We joined the Western Peripheral Expressway and headed south toward the Yamuna.

This was not a spontaneous trip. Jabalpur sits 850km from Gurgaon. It is Ekta's family home. Apple and Kimchi had never been. The drive requires an overnight commitment — the Yamuna Expressway to Agra, then the Agra-Lucknow Expressway east, then south through UP and into Madhya Pradesh. We had done the route planning. We had confirmed Leela Homestay with Anil. We had the Rubicon loaded.

Stop 1: The Food Street Food Court, Yamuna Expressway

We reached The Food Street Food Court near Vrindavan Cut at 8:30pm — about three hours from Gurgaon and exactly the right first stop. Large parking area, clean ground, grass on the perimeter for dogs. KFC, Pizza Hut, Vaango, Subway, and Indian street food inside. Pets are not allowed in the building but the outdoor area is spacious and well-managed. Apple stretched. Kimchi investigated every corner of the parking lot. We ate and were back on the road by 9:09pm.

Stop 2: Rest Area Muhabbatpur and the Husky Encounter

The second stop was the Rest Area at Muhabbatpur on the Agra Expressway at approximately 10:30pm. This rest area has the best grass expanse of any highway stop on this route — a large open field beside the food court, well-lit, consistently clean. We stopped for twenty minutes.

Apple did his rounds and came back. Kimchi spotted Rudransh.

Rudransh is a two-year-old Husky from Delhi who was travelling with his family to Ranchi. Kimchi saw him from about twenty metres and immediately abandoned all composure. What followed was fifteen minutes of two young dogs at a rest area at 10:30pm on a weeknight, discovering each other with complete commitment. Rudransh's family was heading east. We were heading south. Everyone was rested before continuing.

The Long Middle: Kanpur to Panna to Jabalpur

South of Agra the expressway ends. You are on national highways through Kanpur, then Panna, then into Madhya Pradesh. The road quality varies. Traffic is light after midnight. Apple slept through all of it. Kimchi watched until somewhere past Kanpur and then joined him.

Fuel at Jio-bp near Muskara (UP) at 1:33am. Fuel again at Bharat Petroleum near Panna (MP) at 4:40am. By the time we reached the outskirts of Jabalpur at dawn, the Satpura hills were visible on the horizon and the air had changed entirely from the UP plains. Kimchi woke up for this part.

Arrival: Nani Ghar

We pulled into Vijay Nagar at 7:35am after fourteen hours on the road. Anil had the first floor of Leela Homestay unlocked and ready. Apple walked in, assessed the two bedrooms, chose the larger one, and was asleep in twelve minutes. Kimchi inspected every room with the focused intensity of a dog conducting a property survey, claimed the second bed, and also went to sleep.

Nani Ghar. First visit for both of them. Approved.

The Narmada at Gwarighat

By late afternoon both dogs were rested and ready. We drove to Gwarighat. The main ghat on a July evening is crowded — pilgrims, vendors, stray dogs, tourists arriving for the aarti. We went to the Gurudwara side instead, which is quieter, almost empty outside peak hours, and has a natural riverbank with gradual entry.

Apple went in first. Kimchi followed. The Narmada runs colder than the Ganga in July. Both dogs were in and out for an hour. Nani watched from the bank.

This was Apple and Kimchi's first visit to Jabalpur and their first time at Ekta's family home. The road had been 850km. The stay was four nights. The Narmada, from the Gurudwara side, with both dogs swimming, was the right ending to the first day.
