Gurgaon to Jabalpur with Dogs: 850km, One Overnight Drive, and Apple's First Nani Ghar Visit

We left Gurgaon at 5:26pm in the Rubicon with Apple and Kimchi. The Western Peripheral Expressway was clear. Apple settled into the backseat with the efficiency of a dog who has done many overnight drives. Kimchi took the window and immediately began cataloguing Gurgaon traffic with the focused intensity of someone experiencing high-speed travel for the first time. One rule for this route that cannot be overstated: fill your tank completely before leaving. The stretch from Kanpur through Panna into Jabalpur via the Bundelkhand region has almost no operational fuel pumps and zero highway food stops at night.

The Food Street Food Court at Vrindavan Cut is the best first stop on this route. The parking area is large and well-managed. On the left side of the lot there is a grass border — other pet families know this spot too, and it functions as the unofficial dog relief area for the highway. Multiple food options inside: KFC, Pizza Hut, Vaango, Subway, and several Indian street food stalls. Pets are not allowed inside the building but the outside is genuinely spacious. Apple did a full stretch. Kimchi investigated the perimeter systematically. We ate, refuelled everyone, and were back on the road at 9:09pm.

The rest area on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway has the best grass expanse of any highway stop between Gurgaon and Jabalpur. A large open field to the side of the food court, well-lit, consistently clean. We stopped for twenty minutes at 10:30pm. Apple walked his rounds and returned. Kimchi spotted Rudransh — a two-year-old Husky from Delhi travelling with his family to Ranchi — from about twenty metres and immediately dropped all composure. What followed was fifteen minutes of two young dogs at full energy in a highway rest area at 10:30pm while their respective families watched and recovered from driving.

This is the section nobody writes enough warnings about. South of the Agra-Lucknow Expressway the highway narrows and the infrastructure thins fast. Through Kanpur, then toward Panna, then south into Madhya Pradesh, the road is passable but amenities are almost nonexistent at night. We made fuel stops at Jio-bp near Muskara in UP at 1:33am and at Bharat Petroleum near Panna in MP at 4:40am — both were working petrol pumps with no attached food. There is nothing else. If you have dogs who need a proper grass stop in this section, it is planning-dependent: identify a petrol pump with open ground near the road before you leave.

We pulled into Vijay Nagar at 7:35am after fourteen hours on the road. The building has two independent floors — we had the first floor with roof access. Two AC rooms, a hall with a dining table and TV, a fully equipped kitchen, a balcony, and access to the roof. Apple walked in, assessed both rooms, chose the master bedroom, and was horizontal in twelve minutes. Kimchi inspected every room in sequence with the focused energy of a one-year-old dog who has been in a car for fourteen hours and has opinions about new spaces. Both were asleep before we had unpacked.

By late afternoon Apple and Kimchi were rested and wanted out. We drove to Gwarighat. The main ghat on a July evening is crowded with pilgrims, vendors, stray dogs, and tourists. We went instead to the Gurudwara side — a short additional drive that brings you to a completely different experience. The riverbank here is natural stone and sand, almost empty in the late afternoon, with a gradual entry into the river. The Narmada runs cold and clear. Apple went in first and stayed in longest. Kimchi found the shallows and used them. Nani watched from the bank. The Gurudwara side is the correct side to bring dogs to Gwarighat — save this information, it is not in any guide.
