Deer Park Off-Leash Area (Hauz Khas, Delhi)

Deer Park - formally the Hauz Khas District Park - is the most well-known dog-walking destination in Delhi, and one of the few places in the city where dogs can genuinely be off-leash in a designated area rather than just tolerating a crowded footpath. At 200 acres, it is a 13th-century water reservoir converted into a protected urban forest, which means the biodiversity, the scale, and the historic character of the park are all byproducts of its original function - not landscaping decisions made for a park.

The park contains resident deer in a large enclosure (which gives it its name), a central pond that draws migratory birds in winter, 14th-century Islamic tombs and ruins visible along the walking paths, and multiple entry points from Hauz Khas Village. Dogs are welcome throughout; the off-leash zones are specific designated areas within the larger park rather than the entire 200 acres - which is the honest version of "off-leash." For most of the park, leash-on is expected, and keeping dogs leashed near the deer enclosure is non-negotiable.

Practical notes for dog visits

Early morning (5–7 AM) is when Deer Park is at its best for dogs - regular dog-owner community present, cooler weather, lighter tourist footfall. Weekends at the Hauz Khas Village entrance can be genuinely crowded; consider using an alternative entry point for a quieter start. Monkeys are present in sections of the park - keep dogs on leash near the monkey-occupied areas, as monkey-dog encounters can escalate quickly. Carry water and waste bags; bins are available but not always conveniently placed.

After the walk

The Hauz Khas Village area directly adjacent has multiple cafes and restaurants where dogs are accommodated at outdoor seating - making Deer Park the most logical park-to-cafe morning combination in South Delhi. The park's free entry and all-day opening (5 AM to 8 PM) means it works as a quick evening walk as well, not just a dedicated morning outing.
