Everyone writes about Shimla. Nobody writes about why Shimla specifically is not the best dog destination in the area — and what the better options are just 30–90 minutes away.

Chail — Our First Choice

Chail is 45 km from Shimla, 2,250 metres elevation, and in our experience the single best hill station for dogs near Delhi. Pine forests thick enough to walk in. The world's highest cricket ground. The Chail Wildlife Sanctuary with marked trails. And far fewer tourists than Shimla, Manali, or Kasauli.

Getting there from Delhi: NH44 → Chandigarh → NH5 → Solan → Kandaghat → Chail (350 km, 6.5 hours). The last 14 km from Kandaghat is single-lane mountain road. 4WD strongly recommended.

What dogs do in Chail: The Chail Wildlife Sanctuary has 2–3 km walking trails through deodar pine forest where dogs can be walked on leash. The Chail Cricket Ground is open — dogs are allowed on the ground itself.

Best time: March to June and September to November. Avoid July–August (heavy monsoon).

Kasauli — The Closest Easy Option

Kasauli is 65 km from Chandigarh and only 280 km from Delhi — the closest proper hill station. Compact town, beautiful colonial architecture, walkable with dogs, several good dog-friendly guesthouses.

Naldehra — Undiscovered

Naldehra is 22 km from Shimla at 2,044 metres. The golf course area has large open grounds where dogs can walk. Very few tourists. If you are staying near Shimla, Naldehra is the day trip that gives your dog the most space.

If You Must Go to Shimla Itself

  • Stay outside the main town — properties in Chharabra, Mashobra, or Kufri direction have gardens and are less congested
  • Avoid Mall Road with your dog — extremely crowded
  • Kufri: 16 km from Shimla, 2,625 metres, open grasslands where dogs can run

The Mountain Drive: What to Expect

  • Stop every 45 minutes on the mountain section
  • Motion sickness is more common on sharp mountain bends — feed lightly 3 hours before the mountain section
  • Altitude above 1,500 metres: some dogs drink less — actively encourage water at every stop
