Every long dog road trip we have done in the last five years started after 9 PM. Not because we like driving at night - but because it is objectively the best time to drive with dogs in India. The roads are clear. The air is cool. And most importantly, dogs are naturally in their sleep cycle after 9 PM.

Why Night Drives Work Better for Dogs

Dogs are crepuscular - most active at dawn and dusk, naturally resting in the late night hours. A 9 PM departure catches them as they are winding down.

The practical advantages:

  • Ambient temperature is 8–12 degrees C lower than daytime
  • Highway traffic reduces by 60–70% after 11 PM
  • No sun angle issues
  • Food courts and highway stops are less crowded
  • You arrive in the morning - with a full day ahead

Route Planning: The Framework We Use

Stop 1: 2.5–3 hours from departure. Dogs need to have eaten within the first 3 hours and had a proper pee break. We do 30–40 minutes here.

Stop 2 (for drives above 350 km): Another 2.5–3 hours from stop 1. 20–30 minutes, primarily for dogs to stretch and eliminate.

Food Timing for Night Drives

  • Feed dogs their dinner at their normal dinner time (6–7 PM usually)
  • Do NOT give an extra meal before departure
  • At the 3-hour stop, give a small top-up if they are awake and hungry
  • Breakfast at arrival if the drive lands in early morning

Night Drive Safety Considerations

  • Driver fatigue: Switch drivers if possible. Know your limit - most people hit genuine drowsiness around 2–3 AM. Stop, set a 20-minute alarm, sleep.
  • Wildlife on roads: Slow down on forested sections.
  • Poorly lit trucks: Overtake only with full visibility.

Best Routes for Night Drives from Delhi/NCR

  • Gurugram to Jim Corbett (328 km): Mostly expressway and NH, good facilities at Murthal and Gajraula.
  • Delhi to Chandigarh then Shimla/Chail (340–380 km): Leave by 8 PM, reach Kandaghat by 3 AM.
  • Delhi to Rishikesh (250 km): Can be done in one go with a single stop at Murthal.
