There is a version of this list on the internet that includes 47 items and three separate bags. After 7 years and 40,000 km with Apple, Captain and Kimchi, our list is much shorter - and every item on it has earned its place through experience, not theory.

Non-Negotiable: The 8 Items You Cannot Leave Without

  1. Dog food for the trip plus 3 days extra. Highway dhabas do not sell your dog's brand. Pre-portion meals into zip-lock bags labelled by day and dog.
  2. Collapsible water bowl and at least 3 litres of water per dog per day.
  3. Vaccination certificate copy. Paper copy in the car. Digital copy on your phone.
  4. Poop bags - double what you think you need. Triple for drives above 400 km.
  5. Leash plus a backup leash. Keep a second leash in the glovebox.
  6. Tick remover tool. Tick fever is serious. Remove ticks within 4 hours.
  7. Familiar blanket or mat from home. The single most effective anxiety reducer for dogs in new environments.
  8. Your vet's WhatsApp number saved. At 2 AM on a highway you want to reach them in two taps.

Health & Safety Items

  • Basic dog first aid kit: self-adhesive bandage, antiseptic wound spray, saline eye wash, tweezers, disposable gloves.
  • Tick and flea treatment applied before the drive - at least 24 hours before entering any forested area.
  • Anti-nausea medication if your dog gets car sick - ask your vet for Cerenia (maropitant).
  • Any regular medications your dog takes, plus 2 days extra.

Comfort Items

  • One toy or chew they genuinely love
  • Travel-size dry shampoo or dog wipes
  • Small towel for paws before they get back in the car
  • Cooling mat for hot weather drives (April–June in plains)

What to Leave at Home

  • Dog stroller: For mall walks, not road trips
  • Multiple toy sets: One familiar toy is better than five new ones
  • Separate dog travel cot/bed: Their blanket from home is more effective

Packing Strategy: How We Actually Do It

We pack a single dedicated dog bag - a medium backpack or duffel - with everything dog-related. Food portioned in zip-locks by day. Bowls nestled inside each other. First aid pouch inside. This system means our stops are efficient - within 3 minutes of parking, dogs are eating and walking.
