I've been reading about BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diets for large breeds and it makes intuitive sense. Our male German Shepherd, Kaiser, is 2 years old, 35 kg, and has had recurring loose stools on every commercial kibble we've tried (4 different brands over his lifetime).
The concern I have about raw feeding in India specifically: the quality of raw meat available at local butchers varies a lot, there's no USDA-style inspection system, and I'm worried about bacterial contamination from poorly handled meat. My vet says raw feeding is "risky" but couldn't give me specific data.
Has anyone done raw feeding for a large breed in India? Where do you source the meat? Do you freeze before feeding to reduce bacterial load? And what do the vets who support raw feeding say about Indian conditions specifically?
Doing BARF with a GSD in Hyderabad for 2 years now. The sourcing challenge is real but manageable. We use a specific butcher who we've vetted — we asked about their refrigeration, turnover rate (fresh meat daily), and sourcing. Fresh-slaughtered meat from a good butcher is arguably safer than processed kibble in terms of pathogen load.
Freeze-before-feeding protocol: freeze all raw meat for 72 hours at -18°C minimum before feeding. This eliminates most parasites (not all bacteria, but it reduces risk significantly). Defrost in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
The freeze-for-72-hours protocol is what convinced me to try raw — knowing there's a parasite control step made it feel safer. We have a chest freezer now specifically for Kaiser's food batches.
Which butcher in Hyderabad do you use? We're in Banjara Hills and struggling to find someone reliable with good turnover. Happy to DM if you'd prefer.
Practical sources in India: raw frozen pet food is now available through several companies in metros — Pets Choice, B.A.R.F. India, Raw Essentials. These are pre-made raw meals for dogs with balanced nutrition. More expensive than buying butcher meat but far more convenient and with better quality control. Worth trying for a 30-day trial before committing to full butcher-sourced raw.
B.A.R.F. India delivered to us in Pune for the first month as a trial and it was genuinely convenient. Balanced, good quality, and helped us understand the correct ratios before we started sourcing our own.
Kaiser's recurring loose stools on every kibble you've tried is actually a strong argument FOR trying raw — many dogs who don't tolerate any kibble brand do brilliantly on raw because they simply digest whole food better. The loose stools on kibble might be related to the processing, fillers, or specific protein sources rather than the protein itself.
Add organs to the raw diet — not just muscle meat. Liver, kidney, heart are nutritional powerhouses and part of what makes raw feeding nutritionally complete. Liver especially has more nutrients per gram than almost anything else. Keep it to 10% of the diet (too much liver causes vitamin A toxicity).
The bacterial contamination risk is mostly to humans, not dogs — dogs have shorter, more acidic digestive tracts specifically suited to handling raw meat bacteria. The main risk is cross-contamination when you're handling the food: use separate utensils, wash hands thoroughly, don't let Kaiser lick your face after eating raw for a few hours, and clean his bowl with hot water and soap.
Children and immunocompromised family members are the real concern, not Kaiser.
Balance matters with BARF. General guideline: 70% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones (for calcium), 10% organs (of which max 5% liver), 10% vegetables. This approximates prey-model nutrition. Many people start raw with just chicken and miss the balance — that's where deficiencies come from.
Your vet's hesitation is common in India where vets were trained on commercial food protocols. Finding a vet who supports raw feeding and can guide you is valuable. Some integrative or holistic vets in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Hyderabad are knowledgeable about BARF. Worth the effort to find one who can monitor Kaiser through the transition.
