Adopted Bholu (3-year-old Indie mix) from a shelter 4 months ago. The shelter fed him on rice + whatever was donated — home-cooked food. He has never had dry kibble in his life and absolutely refuses it. He'll sniff it and walk away. We've tried 3 different brands (Drools, Pedigree, Royal Canin) with zero success.
We're currently feeding homemade rice + chicken + vegetables which he loves, but we travel a lot and commercial food is much more practical on the road. Also for his long-term nutrition balance I'd like him to accept kibble at least as a supplement.
We're not trying to fully replace his current diet — just get him to accept kibble as part of his meals. Any techniques that have actually worked for stubborn eaters?
The key insight with kibble refusal is that it's about unfamiliarity, not preference — Bholu has never associated kibble with food. The smell of his current food is what triggers eating behaviour.
Most successful technique: soak the kibble in warm water or chicken broth for 15 minutes before serving. This releases the smell and makes the texture similar to soft food. Start with 90% homemade/10% soaked kibble and shift by 5% per week. Most dogs accept this fully within 3-4 weeks.
The warm water soak trick worked for Bholu within 4 days. He was sniffing the bowl suspiciously at first but by day 3 he was eating the soaked kibble happily. Chicken broth version worked even faster.
The smell really is the key — soaked kibble smells completely different from dry and dogs who refuse dry will often accept the soaked version immediately. Great tip.
Top-dressing: mix kibble pieces into his rice-chicken bowl so they're coated in the familiar food smell. He'll eat around them the first few days, then start eating them too. Once he's eating kibble pieces mixed with homemade food, you can gradually increase the ratio.
Top-dressing worked brilliantly for our rescue too. She spent the first two days eating around the kibble pieces and then one day just started eating everything. It's like she suddenly decided it was food.
Try a different kibble texture/type. Some dogs who refuse standard pellets will accept fresh-pressed or freeze-dried kibble (brands like Farmina or Acana come in different textures). It's not about stubbornness — dogs have texture preferences just like humans.
Drizzle a small amount of cooking-less chicken broth (no onion, no salt) over the kibble. Not as a permanent fixture but as a bridge during transition. Combined with gradual mixing as others suggested, most stubborn eaters accept kibble within 3 weeks.
Indie dogs who've been on varied shelter diets can also be surprisingly easy to win over with premium kibble that has a strong smell — chicken-based kibbles are particularly aromatic. Try a sample pack of Orijen or Acana before committing to a large bag.
Don't panic about the transition timeline. Four months of homemade after a lifetime of it means Bholu's gut microbiome is set up for that food. A slow transition is better for his digestion anyway. There's no rush — keep him on homemade, introduce kibble slowly, and accept that he might always prefer 60-70% homemade long term.
