Our 2-year-old Beagle, Muffin, has been on Royal Canin Beagle-specific kibble since 8 weeks. She eats it fine but seems underwhelmed, and her stools are on the loose side more often than not. The vet says she's healthy and the food is fine.
A friend who has a Beagle has been on homemade food since puppyhood — rice, chicken, vegetables — and her coat looks incredible. But the friend spends 1.5-2 hours a week prepping food and adds a multi-vitamin supplement.
I work full-time and can't always commit to that. I'm wondering if there's a middle ground — partially homemade, partially kibble? Or if there's a better kibble brand? Also specific to Beagles: they're notoriously food-obsessed and will eat literally anything. Does that change the calculus?
50% homemade, 50% kibble is a very workable middle ground and what many working pet parents in India settle on. Practically: batch cook rice + chicken breast or egg on Sunday for the week, refrigerate, portion with half a cup of kibble at each meal. Nutritionally reasonable, not too time-intensive, and most dogs do well on it.
The loose stools on Royal Canin could be the protein source (some dogs are sensitive to chicken-based kibbles). Consider trying a different protein like lamb or fish. Orijen, Acana, or Drools Optimum are Indian-market alternatives worth trying.
The 90-10 start for kibble mixing is exactly the ratio that worked for Muffin. Tried 50-50 from day one and had loose stools for a week. Slower transition makes all the difference.
Drools Optimum is surprisingly good for the price point — much better ingredient list than Pedigree and most dogs transition to it well. Good alternative to Royal Canin if the budget is a concern.
Beagle-specific kibble is partly a marketing exercise — any adult medium-breed kibble with good protein content works. Royal Canin Beagle has slightly lower calories to manage the breed's obesity tendency, which is the only real breed-specific feature. A different brand's adult kibble will likely be just as suitable and sometimes cheaper.
Beagle-specific advice on portions: they'll eat until they're ill and then eat more. If you go homemade or semi-homemade, you need to measure calories more carefully than with kibble (which has known caloric density). Beagles have an obesity epidemic — keep the waist visible when looking from above.
For the coat difference you noticed: commercial food varies wildly in omega-3 content. Supplementing any kibble with a fish oil capsule (pierce and squeeze over the food) — even just one capsule of a human omega-3 supplement — makes a visible difference in coat gloss within 4-6 weeks. Much more cost-effective than switching to premium kibble.
Fresh cooked food also helps with loose stools in many dogs — commercial kibble with its preservatives and certain filler grains (corn, wheat) can cause digestive sensitivity in some dogs. Many owners who switch to at least partially homemade see stool consistency improve within a week.
If you want a commercially prepared homemade-style option without the cooking: Freshpet (in some cities), Heads Up For Tails fresh food, or Supertails Fresh are now available in Indian metros. More expensive than kibble but fresher ingredients, no cooking required.
Whatever you decide, transition slowly. If you shift from 100% kibble to 50% homemade overnight, expect 3-5 days of loose stools as the gut microbiome adjusts. Do 75/25 for a week, then 50/50. The adjustment period can make the new food seem like it's causing problems when it's just the change itself.
