It's mango season and we have a large tree in the garden. Our Labrador, Alphonso (yes, named after the mango variety), has decided that eating fallen mangoes is now his primary hobby. He's eaten at least 5-6 small mangoes this week without us catching him.
He's had no visible ill effects — no vomiting, stools are normal, energy is fine. But I'm worried about the sugar content and the seed (he doesn't eat the seed as far as I can tell, he leaves it behind).
How much mango is actually safe for a dog? Is the skin safe? And should I be worried about sugar-related health issues in a dog that's essentially eating his own mango dessert buffet?
Mango flesh is safe for dogs and actually has some nutritional benefits (vitamins A, C, B6, and fibre). The seed is the danger — mango seeds contain cyanide compounds and are a serious choking/obstruction hazard. Since Alphonso is leaving the seeds, the main concern is sugar.
A small amount (1-2 slices) daily is fine for most dogs. 5-6 full small mangoes a day is genuinely too much sugar — the fructose load can cause loose stools and over time can contribute to weight gain and potential blood sugar issues, especially in Labs who are already prone to obesity.
The cyanide in seeds thing really clarifies why we need to be careful. Alphonso is a Lab so he'd probably try to eat the seed if he found one. We started collecting fallen mangoes before letting him in the garden.
"5-6 full mangoes a day is too much" — this needs to be said louder. Labs will literally eat themselves sick if given the chance. The sugar load is real even if they show no immediate symptoms.
The practical solution: net the fallen mangoes or sweep the garden area before letting him out. Or fence off the mango tree area. Labs will eat anything available and regulate nothing — the "he's fine" observation is real but 5-6 mangoes a day for 3 months of mango season is a lot of accumulated sugar.
We did exactly this — fenced off the mango tree area with a simple garden mesh. Alphonso was offended for about two days and then forgot the tree existed. Simple solution.
The skin is technically safe but harder to digest and some dogs get stomach upset from mango skin. The fibre in the skin can cause loose stools. If Alphonso is eating whole fallen mangoes including skin, that might cause digestive issues before the sugar does.
If he does eat a seed accidentally, watch for: repeated vomiting (not just once), bloating, abdominal pain/distress, refusal to eat, constipation after normal stools. These can indicate a seed getting stuck. Seeds from small mangoes might pass through a large Lab but it's a risk — mango seeds are surprisingly large relative to the pit.
Amusing but relevant: our Lab also discovered the mango tree during season and we let her have a few per week. She gained 1.5 kg over mango season without any other diet change. This is how sneaky fruit sugar is. For a Lab, weight management is serious — just something to keep an eye on.
To directly answer: 2 slices of mango as an occasional treat is totally fine. 5-6 full mangoes per day is too much. The mango itself won't poison him but the sugar load needs to be managed.
