Getting conflicting advice about when to spay our 6-month-old female Indie mix. She weighs 14 kg currently and is still growing. One vet says spay at 6 months before the first heat. Another says wait until after the first heat (8-10 months) for hormonal development. A third vet said wait until 12-18 months for full musculoskeletal development.
The research I've found online is mostly from Western countries about large-breed dogs where the evidence favors waiting. But I'm not sure how this applies to an Indian Indie who matures differently.
What's the community's experience with spay/neuter timing for Indies in India? Any post-procedure complications related to timing? And does the street dog overpopulation context change the recommendation at all?
For Indies specifically, the evidence from the large-breed Western studies (which say to wait for musculoskeletal development) applies primarily to dogs 25+ kg breeds. At 14 kg, your Indie is a medium-small dog and the hormonal development concern is less significant than for a 30 kg Labrador.
The Humane Society of India and most Indian rescues recommend spaying before the first heat or very shortly after — the risk of mammary tumours increases significantly after the first heat cycle. For a medium-weight Indie, 6-8 months is the mainstream recommendation in India.
The large-breed research misapplication is so common. Our vet initially recommended waiting to 18 months based on the same studies, but when we specified she was a 14 kg medium-weight Indie, he immediately said 6-8 months was appropriate. Breed size really does change the recommendation.
The mammary tumour risk increase after first heat is the factor that decided it for us. Risk doubles after one heat and goes up significantly after each subsequent one. For us, spaying before the first heat was the clearest choice.
We spayed our Indie at 6 months (she was also approximately 14 kg). No complications, recovery was smooth (5 days activity restriction), she reached her full size at about 10-11 months and there's nothing that suggests the early spay impacted her development. She's now 4 years old and healthy.
The vet who recommended waiting until 12-18 months is applying the large-breed research inappropriately to a medium-weight dog.
Our 13 kg Indie was spayed at 6 months and she's 3 years old now — no developmental issues, full size reached at about 10 months, and in perfect health. Zero regrets about the timing.
The street dog context does change the recommendation in one way: if your dog ever accidentally gets out, an unspayed female Indie in India will attract every intact male in the area and an unplanned pregnancy is a real risk. The overpopulation concern is genuine. For Indies, earlier spay is also the responsible choice from this angle.
Ask whichever vet you choose about laparoscopic spay (keyhole surgery) — available at better-equipped clinics in metros. Faster recovery (2-3 days vs 7-10), less post-op pain, smaller incision. More expensive (₹5,000-8,000 vs standard ₹2,500-4,000) but worth it if available.
Whatever timing you choose: pair the spay with a full dental check, baseline bloodwork, and stool parasite test. You're already under anaesthesia, so it's efficient. Young Indies often have worm burdens and dental issues from early life that won't be visible without testing.
Our rescue organisation's standing advice for Indies: spay between 5-7 months for females unless there's a specific health reason to wait. Post-first-heat mammary tumour risk increase is real and well-documented. Given that you've already reached 6 months, I'd schedule it soon.
Post-spay complications are rare in young healthy dogs. The main risks scale with age and weight at time of surgery — younger and healthier = lower anaesthetic risk. Complications are more common in overweight adults or dogs spayed during heat.
Spay during heat cycle increases bleeding risk significantly — if she comes into heat before your appointment, wait 2-3 months after the heat ends.
