I've decided to adopt a senior dog — specifically a 9-year-old female Indie from a rescue organisation. I chose senior adoption intentionally because these dogs are the hardest to adopt and I feel I can give her a good final chapter.
I'm a first-time dog owner. I know senior dogs are generally lower energy and in some ways "easier" than puppies, but I want to be prepared for the health and care differences. What specifically changes in an older dog's needs compared to a young adult dog?
What genuinely changes:
Vet visits: twice a year instead of annually. Senior dogs (7+) have faster-moving health changes — a 6-month gap between checkups is too long when things can shift quickly. Budget for this.
Dental: nearly all dogs 9+ have significant dental disease unless they've had excellent dental care. Get a dental assessment early and ask about scaling. Bad teeth cause pain and organ damage.
Diet: senior-formulated food has lower calories (seniors are less active) but higher-quality protein. Don't switch to "light" food — seniors need protein to maintain muscle mass.
The twice-yearly vet visits feel like a lot initially but they've caught things early for our 10-year-old that would have been much harder to treat later. A kidney function check at month 6 caught early CKD — we've been managing it with diet for two years now.
The dental disease point is something I was completely unprepared for. Our senior adoption had 8 teeth removed at her first dental cleaning. She looked so much more comfortable after. We had no idea she'd been in chronic pain.
Joint and mobility: watch for stiffness when she first gets up, reluctance to climb stairs, difficulty jumping. These are often the first signs of arthritis which is common at 9+. Soft, raised-edge orthopaedic beds are important. Ramps instead of stairs for access to furniture if she'll be allowed on it. Fish oil supplementation helps joints.
If she shows stiffness, ask your vet about anti-inflammatory medication. Dogs who are comfortable and mobile live significantly better and longer than dogs in pain who stop moving.
Cognitive changes: some senior dogs show confusion, disorientation, nighttime restlessness, or apparent "forgetting" of house training — this is Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (equivalent of dementia) and is common at 9+. It's manageable with medication and routine, but worth knowing about so you're not blindsided if it develops.
Keeping a strict daily routine is genuinely important for seniors with cognitive changes — predictability reduces confusion-based anxiety.
The Canine Cognitive Dysfunction point is so important to know in advance. Our 11-year-old started night pacing and initially we thought something was acutely wrong. Knowing it's a diagnosable condition with management options made it so much less frightening.
Emotionally: senior dogs from rescue organisations have often had hard lives. Some bond very quickly because they seem to understand they've found safety. Others carry trauma. Give her 3-6 months to settle and don't judge the relationship by the first few weeks.
The bond you'll form with a senior dog who chooses you is something special. You made a beautiful decision.
The lower energy thing is real: a 9-year-old Indie will be happy with a 20-30 minute walk and light play. This is a wonderful thing for a first-time owner who isn't ready for a puppy's demands. But don't let "low energy" become "no exercise" — regular gentle movement maintains muscle, joint health, and cognitive function.
Budget consideration: senior dogs have more health events. Pet insurance is generally more expensive or doesn't cover pre-existing conditions at 9+, but a dedicated savings buffer (₹15,000-20,000 ready emergency fund) makes a significant difference in being able to respond to health issues without financial stress.
