Aggregator lists accepted

Most pet travel platforms in India source their listings from aggregator lists, TripAdvisor tags, or bulk-imported data that has never been confirmed against a primary source. We know because we made that mistake ourselves - and it cost us 50 listings in a single day.

This article explains exactly how we verify pet-friendly places in India, what each verification tier means, and why the information on this platform is structured the way it is. It is also an honest account of the mistake that forced us to build a better system.

Why Most Pet-Friendly Lists in India Are Unreliable

The core problem is this: "pet-friendly" is not a regulated claim. Any hotel, café, or resort can call itself pet-friendly on any listing platform with zero accountability. No one checks. No one calls. The property might have changed policy, closed, or never actually been pet-friendly in the first place.

For a pet parent, acting on wrong information is not just inconvenient. It is arriving at a resort at 11 PM after a 6-hour drive with a dog, and being turned away at the gate. It is a dog who has been in a car for hours, a family with no backup plan, and a property that cannot help you.

We built Pet Friendly Places because we experienced this, and because the alternative - calling every single property before every single trip - is what every pet parent in India is currently doing manually.

What Happened in May 2026

In May 2026, we added 50 Rishikesh listings sourced from aggregator lists - TripAdvisor "pet-friendly" category tags and listicle articles. We added them in bulk. We did not call a single property.

Within days, we started cross-checking against primary sources. Property websites. Google Hotels About tabs. Booking.com pet policy sections. What we found: multiple properties in our database were not actually pet-friendly. The most visible example was a property whose own hotel rules page stated explicitly: "pets are not permitted on hotel premises."

We deleted all 50 listings in one day. Every single one. And we rewrote our sourcing rules from scratch.

The Four Verification Tiers - Exactly What Each One Means

🐾 Tier 1 - Tails Verified

The founders of Pet Friendly Places - Akash and Ekta of Travel With Tails - personally visited the property with Apple (Golden Retriever), Captain (Indie dog), and Kimchi (Black Retriever). The badge is only granted after an actual physical visit. Never from research. Never from a phone call. Never to suggest credibility that was not earned in person.

Tails Verified listings appear first in all search results. Their listing pages show the visit date, visit context, and link to the travel story from that trip. Currently four listings hold this tier - all in the Jim Corbett area, all personally visited and documented.

The gold badge: a round stamp with a purple gradient interior, champagne gold ring, and the words "TAILS · VERIFIED" with a gold paw print.

✓ Tier 2 - Team Verified

Our team called or emailed the property and confirmed the pet policy in writing, with a date logged. We record the team member's name, the call date, and the exact policy confirmed in the verification_notes field of every listing.

Acceptable primary sources for Team Verified: the property's own website pet policy page, a direct phone call with policy confirmed, Google Hotels "About" tab showing pet-friendly status from the property's own profile, or Booking.com''s pet policy section in property details.

Not acceptable: TripAdvisor tags, listicle articles, aggregator "pet-friendly" lists, or any source where we cannot trace the claim back to the property itself.

Currently three listings are Team Verified: all three Hosteller Rishikesh properties, confirmed via a direct call and cross-referenced against thehosteller.com FAQ.

✓ Tier 3 - Owner Verified

The property owner claimed their listing on Pet Friendly Places and confirmed their own pet policy via our claim form. This tier gives property owners direct control over their own information - they can update it when policy changes, add photos, and respond to user reports.

Currently zero listings hold this tier. We are building the claim flow and will surface this more prominently to property owners.

Tier 4 - Listed

The default tier for all new submissions. No verification has been performed. The listing shows an amber warning: "Pet policy reported but not yet verified - please call ahead." Listed tier properties do not appear on city hub pages or category pages. They are searchable but clearly marked.

How to Read a Listing Page

Every listing on Pet Friendly Places shows its verification tier prominently. If you see the gold Tails Verified stamp - we stayed there with our dogs. If you see the violet Team Verified tick - we called them. If you see the amber warning - call them yourself before booking.

The pet_policy field on every listing is written in plain language, not marketing copy. It includes the specific rule (private rooms only, no dorms), the specific charge or free status, and any constraints (no dorms, must notify in advance, maximum number of pets). If a property has a complicated policy - like The Hosteller''s private-rooms-only rule - we surface that prominently in the description, the pet policy field, and the cons section. We do not bury restrictions in fine print.

What Happens When a Listing Is Wrong

Every listing page has a "Report incorrect info" button. Reports go directly to our admin inbox with the reporter''s details and issue type. We investigate, call the property, and either correct or remove the listing. A listing that cannot be confirmed against a primary source after a report gets downgraded to Listed tier or deleted.

We take these reports seriously because arriving with a dog and being turned away is exactly the failure mode this platform exists to prevent.

For Property Owners

If you run a pet-friendly hotel, resort, café, dhaba, clinic, or any business that genuinely welcomes pets - list on Pet Friendly Places and reach pet parents who are actively searching for exactly what you offer.

The platform is free to list. Verification improves your ranking in search results. Claiming your listing gives you direct control over your information. Add your place here → or claim an existing listing →

The full verification policy - including what evidence is required for each tier, how we handle disputes, and our delisting criteria - is at petfriendlyplaces.in/verification →

Why This Matters for India''s Pet Travel Community

India''s pet travel infrastructure is growing fast. The number of pet parents who travel with dogs has increased significantly in the last five years. What has not kept pace is reliable, verified information about where dogs are actually welcome.

Pet Friendly Places exists to build that resource - one verified listing at a time, with the evidence documented, and the sourcing traceable back to the property itself. It is slower than bulk importing. It is significantly more trustworthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you verify if a place is actually pet-friendly?

We verify against primary sources only: the property's own website pet policy page, a direct phone call to the property, Google Hotels About tab, or Booking.com pet section. Aggregator lists and TripAdvisor tags are not accepted as verification sources.

What is the difference between Tails Verified and Team Verified?

Tails Verified means Akash, Ekta, Apple, Captain, and Kimchi personally visited the property. Team Verified means the Pet Friendly Places team confirmed the pet policy via phone call, email, or primary source documentation. Both tiers are trustworthy - the difference is personal vs remote verification.

What happens to listings that turn out to be wrong?

We remove them immediately. Tiger Den Resort in Ranthambore was deleted after a phone call confirmed they do not allow pets. Every incorrect listing is a failure that we take seriously. Full verification policy →
