The phrase "pet friendly hotel" is one of the most misleading labels in Indian hospitality. It can mean anything from "dogs can sleep in your room" to "dogs are allowed on a leash in the parking area only." We have been in both situations. We have driven 400 km and arrived at a resort that turned out to have a Rs 2,000 per night pet charge nobody mentioned, no garden access, and a front desk manager who looked horrified when he saw three dogs.

This guide exists because of those experiences. After visiting over 30 pet-friendly stays across India with Apple, Captain and Kimchi, we know exactly what to ask, what the answers tell you, and what genuine pet-first hospitality looks like.

The 8 Questions to Ask Every Hotel Before Booking

Call. Do not email. Properties sometimes have a junior staff member handling emails who says yes to everything without knowing the actual policy.

Question 1: What is the pet charge per night?

The range in India: Rs 0 to Rs 3,000 per night per dog. Some properties charge nothing. Some charge Rs 500–800 which is reasonable. Anything above Rs 1,000 per night is high.

Question 2: How many dogs can we bring?

Many hotels allow one dog but have never considered three. Ask specifically and the reaction tells you whether they have hosted multiple dogs before.

Question 3: Are there any breed or size restrictions?

Some 5-star properties ban breeds they consider aggressive. Ask directly. If they ask you for a breed certificate, that is a red flag and usually unnecessary.

Question 4: Where can the dog go within the property?

This is the most revealing question. A genuinely dog-friendly property will say "garden, lawns, most outdoor areas." Specifically ask about: the pool area, the restaurant area, and the garden or lawn.

Question 5: Do you have a garden or outdoor space for the dog?

A pet-friendly stay without outdoor space is not genuinely pet-friendly. Dogs need to relieve themselves, walk, and decompress after a long drive.

Question 6: Do you require vaccination certificates?

Good properties do. It protects their other guests. If they ask for vaccination records, it means they have a policy.

Question 7: Are there other dogs staying at the property?

Worth asking if your dog is reactive around other dogs. Some properties actively manage this, others have no system.

Question 8: Can you share photos of where dogs are allowed?

Properties that have genuinely hosted dogs before will immediately share photos. Properties that have not will go quiet.

Understanding Pet Charges: What Is Reasonable

  • Rs 0: Ideal. Properties that charge nothing genuinely welcome pets.
  • Rs 300–600 per night: Reasonable. Covers cleaning.
  • Rs 700–1,000 per night: Acceptable for high-end properties.
  • Rs 1,000+ per night: High. Ask what is included.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • "Dogs allowed but not in common areas" - what does pet-friendly mean then?
  • "We will have to check with the manager" followed by silence
  • No mention of outdoor space
  • The booking site says pet-friendly but the property has no idea when you call

Types of Stays That Work Best for Dogs

  • Homestays and farmstays: Owners are present, personally invested, and usually have dogs themselves.
  • Boutique eco-resorts: Understand that dogs belong in natural settings.
  • Forest properties and wildlife-adjacent stays: Have evolved to genuinely welcome pets.
