India has one of the highest rates of intestinal parasites in dogs in the world. The combination of climate, street animal proximity, and water quality creates year-round exposure risk. Despite this, deworming is the most consistently skipped routine health task in Indian pet households.
Why Deworming Matters More in India
Indian dogs face routine exposure to: Roundworms (Toxocara canis) β present in contaminated soil everywhere. Hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) β penetrate skin through contaminated soil, blood-sucking, cause anaemia in puppies. Tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum, Echinococcus) β transmitted through fleas and raw meat. Whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) β acquired from contaminated water or soil. Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) β transmitted by mosquitoes, significantly more common in coastal and humid regions.
The Deworming Schedule
Puppies:
- 2 weeks of age β first deworming
- Every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age
- Monthly from 12 weeks to 6 months
- Every 3 months from 6 months onward
Adult dogs:
- Every 3 months throughout life
- Never skip more than 4 months regardless of apparent health
Before travel:
- Deworm at least 10 days before any trip
- Do not deworm immediately before or during travel
- If the last deworming was more than 2 months ago, deworm 2 weeks before departure
Deworming Medicines Available in India
Drontal Plus (Bayer/Elanco): The gold standard in India. Covers roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms in a single tablet. Available at all veterinary pharmacies without prescription. Given by weight β always weigh your dog before dosing.
Canvet Plus / Fentas Plus: Similar broad-spectrum efficacy. Slightly cheaper than Drontal.
Milbemax: Particularly effective for tapeworms and heartworm prevention in high-risk coastal areas.
Signs of Worm Infestation
- Visible worms in stool (roundworms look like spaghetti; tapeworm segments look like rice grains near the tail)
- Scooting on the floor
- Weight loss despite good appetite
- Distended, pot-bellied appearance (especially puppies with roundworms)
- Dull coat, lethargy
- Chronic soft stools or intermittent diarrhoea
Zoonotic Risk: Why This Matters for Your Family
Several dog worms can infect humans, particularly children: Toxocara canis (roundworm larvae can cause vision problems and organ damage in children), Ancylostoma (hookworm β skin infection from contaminated ground), Echinococcus (tapeworm β causes hydatid cysts in organs).
Regular deworming of your dog protects not just the dog but every person in your household.
