Captain's first night in our home, he hid behind the sofa for four hours. He had come from a rescue organisation that had found him as a puppy near a commercial complex in Gurugram β€” underweight, cautious, and with the deeply held conviction that humans were unpredictable. He was eight weeks old and already knew things that Apple, who had come from a responsible breeder, would never need to know.

Three years, 40,000 km, three mountain trips, and one drone chase later β€” Captain is one of the most emotionally present dogs we have ever known.

Where to Adopt in India

NGO shelters and rescue organisations: The most reliable source for healthy, temperament-assessed dogs. Most reputable rescues have done a basic health check, deworming, and vaccination before adoption.

Look for rescues that foster dogs in homes, do a home check or application process, have a return contract, and provide post-adoption support. Major rescue organisations: CUPA (Bangalore), Friendicoes (Delhi), Charlie's Animal Rescue Centre (Delhi), World For All (Mumbai).

The First 30 Days: What to Expect

The "3-3-3 rule": 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn routine, 3 months to feel at home. With street dogs, some of these timelines extend.

Captain hid behind the sofa for most of his first 24 hours. We put his food near the sofa so he did not have to come out to eat. We sat near him reading, not making eye contact. By day 2 he was coming out voluntarily.

Fear Reactivity: The Most Common Challenge

Street dogs often have fear responses to specific triggers: men with sticks or bags, uniformed people, loud vehicles, being approached directly from the front. These are learned survival responses. Fear reactivity is not aggression β€” it is counter-conditioned with patience and consistency.

Captain is still mildly reactive to uniformed security guards approaching him directly. Everything else has resolved. Three years of patient counter-conditioning.

Health: First 30 Days Checklist

  • Vet visit within the first week
  • Deworming immediately
  • Start vaccination series
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Spay/neuter discussion
  • Dental check

Adopting When You Already Have a Dog

We adopted Captain when we already had Apple. Neutral ground introduction, parallel walking, separate feeding stations for the first month. Apple's calm temperament made Captain's integration significantly easier.

The Reward

The trust, when it comes, is different. Apple trusts us because she was raised to trust humans. Captain trusts us because he chose to. The quality of that relationship cannot be replicated by purchasing a puppy from a breeder.
