I've read all the official IRCTC rules about dogs in the luggage van and First AC but I can't find a single person who's actually done the Bangalore to Mumbai route (Udyan Express or Rajdhani) with a medium-sized dog in the past year.
My dog, Mango, is a 15 kg Indie mix — too big for in-cabin on flights, and flying cargo feels wrong for a 3-year-old dog with no cargo travel experience. The train is 24+ hours so it's a long time regardless.
What is the actual process? Do you pay at the station? Does the dog stay in the luggage van the whole time? Can you visit? And most importantly — is this humane for a dog who's never been on a long journey before?
Did Chennai to Delhi with a 20 kg Labrador last year — the rules haven't changed much. Process: arrive at the station 2 hours early, go to the Parcel Office (separate from passenger booking), present dog, vaccination certificate, and vet health certificate (dated within 10 days for some stations). Pay the parcel fee based on weight — was about ₹300-500 for us.
The dog goes in the luggage/brake van at the end of the train. You CAN visit during the journey but it's awkward — you have to go through several coaches and the guard van is usually locked. The guard on duty controls access. Some are cooperative, some aren't.
The tip about the guard is crucial. We gave ₹150 and left our number — the guard WhatsApped us two photos of Mango sleeping peacefully during the journey. We were so relieved.
Just confirmed: the Rajdhani brake van is significantly better ventilated than older stock like Udyan Express. It's worth the premium for a 24-hour journey with a dog.
Honest opinion for a 24-hour journey: this is manageable but stressful for the dog, especially the first time. Mango will have no visual of you for long stretches. If he's generally calm and used to being alone at home, he'll probably be okay. If he has separation anxiety, this will be genuinely distressing.
The luggage van has no climate control on most trains. Bangalore to Mumbai in summer means the van can get very hot through Maharashtra. I'd seriously consider the night train only for this reason.
If Mango has never done a long journey, I'd strongly suggest doing a 4-6 hour train journey first as a test. See how he handles the crate in a moving train, the noise, and not having you immediately accessible. That data will tell you whether the 24-hour trip is wise.
Have you considered a pet transport service for this route? Companies like PetKonnect do accompanied pet transport where someone from their team travels with your dog. More expensive (₹4000-8000 for that route) but the dog isn't alone.
One practical thing: don't let him eat a full meal for 4 hours before boarding. Light water is fine. Full stomach + motion + anxiety = mess in the crate. Light meals throughout the journey once settled are much better.
The Rajdhani is a better option than Udyan Express because it's faster (journey time matters a lot) and the brake van condition is generally better maintained. Udyan Express is quite old in stock.
Bring: water bowl, enough food pre-measured, a familiar blanket, and your dog's favourite toy in the crate. The familiar smell helps enormously. And tip the brake van guard — they'll check on your dog more frequently if you give them ₹100-200 and your number.
PetKonnect is legit — a friend used them for a Delhi-Kolkata journey. The handler sent WhatsApp updates every 3-4 hours. Worth every rupee for peace of mind on a long overnight journey.
