Planning a 4-day trip to Coorg in October with my partner and our 5-year-old Beagle, Biscuit. I've done a lot of research and the usual suspects keep coming up — Honey Valley, Rainforest Retreat, some Airbnbs in Madikeri — but reviews are mixed and outdated.
The specific thing I want to know: when a place says "pets welcome" in Coorg, does that mean they actually welcome pets inside the cottage/room, or is it outdoor-only? Biscuit is perfectly house-trained and calm indoors but we're not booking a trip where he has to sleep in a kennel or tied outside.
Also how is the leash situation in Coorg? Can a Beagle be off-leash safely or are there wildlife concerns (I've heard about leopards in the coffee plantation areas)?
Stayed at a coffee estate homestay near Virajpet last November with our Lab and it was genuinely wonderful. The family who ran it had two dogs themselves — our Lab slept inside on a blanket they provided, no issue whatsoever. The word "pet-friendly" at family-run estates in Coorg usually means the owners like animals, not just a policy checkbox.
Big corporate resorts in Coorg are different — they might have a "pet room" that's a separate cottage or have outdoor-only rules.
This matches our experience at a similar family-run estate near Kushalnagar. The owners' own two dogs were a great sign — they immediately knew how to make Biscuit comfortable.
Exactly right about the corporate resort difference. We made the mistake of booking a resort once — they had a "pet room" which was basically a shed. Family homestays are a completely different experience.
The wildlife concern is real and worth taking seriously. Leopard sightings near coffee estates are documented, especially at dusk and dawn. Keep Biscuit on leash after 5pm and before 8am even in the compound. We were specifically advised this by our homestay owners — they were very matter-of-fact about it, not alarmist.
Also, leeches during monsoon/post-monsoon. Check Biscuit's paws, ears, and belly after any grass walk. They're harmless but annoying.
Message the homestay directly and ask "can my dog sleep inside the room with us?" — that exact question. You'll get a definitive answer. Most good ones in Coorg will say yes. If they hedge or say "in the veranda," keep looking.
For October specifically, post-monsoon is the best time — greenery is at its peak and temperature is perfect (22-26°C). Biscuit will be in heaven. The coffee estates have paths through the plantation that are perfect for morning walks on-leash.
Honey Valley is genuinely great for pets. We went twice with our Border Collie. The main house is off-limits to dogs but the individual cottages — you're on your own. Staff were helpful and actually made a little bed for our dog. Far from Madikeri so roads are a challenge but it's beautiful.
One practical note: carry your own dog food and feeding bowls. Some homestays in Coorg are far from any town and there's no pet supply store nearby. Stock up in Mysore before you head into the plantation belt.
