Doing Pune to Goa by car next month with our 2-year-old Indie mix, Papaya. She loves car rides generally and is used to 3-4 hour drives to Mahabaleshwar, but Pune to Goa is 9-10 hours on the NH4B route through Kolhapur.
I'm worried about her getting restless after the 5-hour mark. She's not a big water drinker unless we stop and put a bowl down, which means I'm also a bit worried about hydration.
Looking for: actual places to stop (not just highway rest areas — somewhere with green space and shade), vet clinics en route in case of emergency, and any restaurants around Kolhapur or Amboli that don't mind dogs outside.
Kolhapur city itself has a lovely garden near Rankala Lake where you can stop for 20-30 minutes. Plenty of shade, locals walk their dogs there too so Papaya will be comfortable. It's a small detour off the main highway but worth it.
From Kolhapur to the Ghat section is the most taxing — the Amboli Ghat roads are winding and some dogs get nauseous there. Stop before the ghats, give her a light snack (not a full meal) and water.
Rankala Lake is such a good stop. We took Papaya there too — she had a brilliant 20 minutes just sniffing the whole garden. Totally agree it's worth the small detour.
Yes the Amboli Ghat section is rough for dogs prone to car sickness. We gave a plain biscuit 20 mins before and stopped at the top of the ghat — helped a lot.
There's a decent dhaba just before the Amboli descent — forget the name but you can't miss it, it's the one with the waterfall view. The staff were fine with our dog sitting outside. Cool, shaded, and the food is good.
Emergency vet wise, Kolhapur has a decent municipal vet hospital but for anything serious you'd want to be in Goa or back in Pune. I'd carry a printed emergency contacts list from PetMD or your regular vet.
Pack more water than you think you need. We do Pune-Goa 2-3 times a year with our Spitz and I carry 6 litres minimum. Tupperware with a flat lid works as a makeshift bowl at every stop. Aim to stop every 2 hours even if just for 10 minutes.
The 6-litre minimum water rule is real. We ran out last trip because Papaya kept wanting to drink at every stop and it was 38°C. Never again — we carry 8 litres now.
If you're going via Kolhapur and Sawantwadi, the area around Vengurla has a lovely quiet spot on the creek road. It's a bit off the tourist path so it's uncrowded — dogs can have a proper run without bothering anyone.
Indie dogs generally travel better than you expect. Papaya will probably be fine as long as you stop every 90-120 minutes. The bigger risk with Pune-Goa in summer is paw burns on hot roads when you stop — keep her on grass at every stop, not the tarmac.
Also time your arrival in Goa for late afternoon — beach sand is scorching until 5pm in May-June. Our dog would refuse to walk on it midday. After 5pm it's perfect.
One more thing — carry her vaccination record and a health certificate from your vet dated within 3 months. Goa doesn't technically check at the border but some beach resorts ask for it when you check in with a pet.
