Our 4-year-old Dachshund, Sausage, vomits reliably at about the 45-minute mark on any car journey. Short drives he's fine — seems to be related to prolonged motion. We have a Delhi to Kasauli trip coming up (about 5.5 hours) and I'm dreading it.
Vet prescribed Gravol (dimenhydrinate) for humans at a half-tablet dose last time and it worked but left him heavily sedated for almost 8 hours after we arrived — which ruined the first evening.
Looking for: alternatives that don't sedate as heavily, positioning tricks, whether ginger actually works for dogs, or if there's a proper veterinary anti-nausea drug that doesn't knock them out.
Our Dachshund (same breed, same problem!) responded really well to Cerenia (maropitant) — it's the only FDA-approved anti-nausea drug specifically for dogs. Much less sedating than Gravol. Give it 1-2 hours before travel on an empty stomach. Ask your vet for a prescription — some will prescribe it easily, others are unfamiliar with it.
Cerenia was exactly what our vet prescribed too! It's amazing that it's not more widely known. Sausage's vet had to look it up but it's been approved for dogs for years. Really wish we'd tried it before the Gravol disasters.
One thing to note — Cerenia needs to be given on an empty stomach for best effect. We gave it with food the first time and it wasn't as effective. Vet clarified it after.
Positioning makes a massive difference for Dachshunds especially. Face forward, elevated to window height so they can see the horizon. Motion sickness in dogs has the same vestibular cause as in humans — seeing movement helps the brain reconcile the sensation. We use a booster seat strapped to the headrest and our Dachshund improved almost immediately.
The elevated booster seat trick genuinely works! It took our Dachshund about 2 trips to realise he could see out the window and after that he stopped drooling and panting immediately. Such a simple fix.
Ginger: yes it works, but modestly. Not enough for a severe case like Sausage's. What helped us more was not feeding for 3 hours before travel and keeping the car cool (around 20°C). Heat makes nausea worse.
Also stop every 45-50 minutes even before he shows symptoms. Let him walk on grass for 5-10 minutes and then continue. The breaks reset the vestibular system.
With repeated exposure, many dogs improve naturally. If you do 3-4 short trips a week just for fun — park, store, anywhere — the car association becomes less anxiety-inducing and the nausea often reduces. Takes 3-4 weeks but worth it if you travel often.
We managed our cocker's car sickness with a combination: Cerenia + no food 4 hours before + stopping at Murthal instead of pushing through. By Kasauli we were fine. The no-food rule is probably the single biggest factor.
Thundershirt helps some dogs with car anxiety (which makes nausea worse). Calming anxiety often reduces the nausea trigger. Worth a try before more medication.
