We've been planning a Manali trip for two years and finally have the time in June, but our Husky, Blizzard, is understandably not built for peak summer. He's 3 years old and in good health, but I know Huskies overheat easily even in normal Delhi weather, let alone a 14-hour drive.
We're planning to drive, not fly, because we don't trust airlines with a dog his size. The route goes through Chandigarh, Bilaspur, and the Kullu valley. Temperatures in the plains will be 40°C+ before we hit altitude.
Has anyone driven with a heavy-coated dog in summer? What cooling solutions actually work in a car? Do we drive at night through the plains? Any stops you'd recommend that have shade and water for dogs?
We did the exact same route with our Siberian Husky last summer. Drove through the night from Delhi to Chandigarh — left at 11pm, was in Chandigarh by 4am when it was still cool. Took a 3-hour break there before continuing. That night driving stretch through the plains made all the difference.
For the car, we used a cooling mat (got one from Heads Up For Tails) and kept a spray bottle with cold water to mist him every 30-40 minutes. Never let the AC go below 22°C on his side — too cold and their muscles stiffen.
Once you cross Bilaspur and start climbing, temperatures drop naturally. Above Mandi it was genuinely pleasant even in June.
The night drive tip is gold. We did exactly this and Blizzard was totally calm through Chandigarh because it was cool and quiet. Highly recommend leaving by 10pm latest.
Agreed on the timing — once we hit Rohtang the breeze was so cool he was actually shivering a little! Brought a light fleece blanket just in case.
Vet tip from our experience: clip the tummy fur but NEVER the main coat for a Husky. The double coat actually insulates both ways — against cold and heat. Shaving it destroys that function and can cause heat rash. Our vet in Bangalore was very clear about this.
Also carry ORS sachets (the ones for dogs — Drip-Drop or just plain electrolyte water) and a travel-size cooling vest. Wet it at each petrol stop and strap it on during breaks outside the car.
Just to add — do NOT shave a Husky even if a groomer suggests it. We almost made that mistake and our regular vet was horrified when we mentioned it.
I'd suggest breaking the trip into two days if possible. Delhi to Chandigarh or Sundernagar on day one (drive before sunrise), stay the night, continue to Manali on day two when you're already in cooler altitude. Pushing 14 hours in one go with a heat-sensitive breed is hard on the dog and on you.
Check the Pandoh Dam rest area — there's a stream right there and it's a well-known dog-stop for people doing this drive. Blizzard would love it. The Aut tunnel area also has a small dhaba where we always stop. Cool enough and plenty of space for a big dog to stretch.
One thing nobody tells you: carry frozen water bottles. Fill 3-4 1-litre bottles, freeze them overnight, wrap in a thin towel and place near the dog. They last 4-5 hours and provide sustained cooling. Much better than relying only on the car AC which cycles on and off at engine load.
Also confirm your homestay or hotel in Manali is prepared for a Husky. Some places that say pet-friendly have restrictions on large breeds. We had an issue at Vashisht once where they were fine with small dogs but asked our Lab to stay on the balcony. Call ahead specifically with the breed and size.
