We live near a forested area in Pune and during monsoon season our dogs (two Indie mixes) come home with ticks regularly despite prevention. We use Frontline but still find 2-3 ticks per walk during peak season.
I've seen about 6 different methods described online — twisting counter-clockwise, straight pull with tweezers, petroleum jelly suffocation, alcohol application, burning with a match. Our vet says only use a tick twister tool but we don't always have one handy.
What's the safest method when you don't have a proper tick removal tool immediately available? Are there methods that increase the risk of disease transmission by stressing the tick? And what should we watch for after removal?
The methods that are dangerous: petroleum jelly, alcohol, nail polish remover, burning. These stress the tick and can cause it to regurgitate saliva back into the wound, increasing disease transmission risk. Never use these.
Safe improvised method without a proper tool: two toothpicks (or wooden chopstick tips) on either side of the tick's body, as close to the skin as possible. Apply steady upward pressure without twisting or squeezing. Pull the body parallel to the skin, not perpendicular. It's clunky but works.
The toothpick method actually works really well once you try it — the key is getting them as close to the skin as possible before lifting. We used two toothpicks and got a clean removal on first try.
Can confirm — the burning/petroleum jelly myths are everywhere and genuinely dangerous. Our neighbour tried the petroleum jelly method and the tick definitely regurgitated. Their dog needed a full round of doxycycline after.
If you're near a pharmacy, Tick Twister tools are available at most places for ₹150-200 — worth keeping 3-4 in the house permanently if you live near forest. They're genuinely the safest method and much less likely to leave the head behind.
The "head left behind" issue: if you feel resistance or the body comes off without the head, don't dig at it. The head piece usually expels itself within a few days. Clean the area with antiseptic and monitor.
Tick Twister tools are a lifesaver — we have them in every room and in the car. For ₹150-200 it's the kind of thing you only regret NOT having when you need it at 11pm in the dark.
For Frontline not being fully effective in peak monsoon: talk to your vet about Nexgard or Bravecto (oral monthly/quarterly tablets). Many dogs in tick-heavy areas do better with oral preventives because topicals can wash off or lose efficacy in very humid conditions.
After peak tick season (usually August-October in Pune), do a full body tick check before bed every night: between toes, inside ears, groin, armpits, under tail. Focus on warm skin-fold areas. A small head torch helps a lot for this.
Things to monitor after removal: redness or swelling at the bite site that spreads over 24-48 hours, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite within 7-14 days. These can indicate tick fever (Ehrlichia or Babesia) which needs immediate vet attention. Tick fever can kill within days if not caught, so monitor actively.
Save the removed tick in a sealed plastic bag with the date written on it. If your dog shows symptoms in the following two weeks, having the tick for identification helps the vet understand what disease to test for. Most people don't do this but it's surprisingly useful.
