Our Cocker Spaniel, Caramel, is 18 months old and has had three ear infections this year already. The vet says it's because of the breed's anatomy — floppy ears trapping moisture — and that we need to be cleaning them regularly at home.
The problem is I've tried twice and Caramel absolutely hates it. She shakes her head violently, scratches her ears after we put anything in, and the whole experience is miserable for both of us. Our vet recommended Epi-Otic cleaner but Caramel reacted the same way to it.
What's the actual routine? How often? Any technique to make it less stressful? And how do we tell the difference between just needing a clean versus an active infection that needs vet treatment?
Three infections in 18 months means routine cleaning isn't optional anymore — Cocker Spaniels with that history need weekly ear maintenance minimum. The struggle you're describing is very common and worth working through.
Technique: warm the cleaner bottle slightly in your hands for 2 minutes before use — cold liquid is a big reason dogs react badly. Fill the ear canal, massage the base firmly for 30-60 seconds (you'll hear a squelching sound — that's correct), then let her shake, then gently wipe out the outer ear with a cotton ball. Never cotton buds down the canal.
The warm bottle tip changed everything for our Cocker. She went from violently fighting the process to tolerating it within a week just from warming the cleaner first. Can't believe how simple a fix it was.
The 30-60 second massage is the step most people skip. I was just squirting and wiping for a year and the cleaner wasn't doing anything useful because it wasn't getting worked into the canal.
For the stress: start with just touching her ears every day without any product. Reward heavily with treats. Then progress to rubbing your finger around the outer ear with a treat. Then add the warm cleaner. The desensitisation takes 2-3 weeks but once you have it, it becomes easy and even routine that she tolerates.
Infection signs vs needing a clean: brown/dark waxy discharge = usually just wax buildup, needs cleaning. Yellow or greenish discharge, strong sour smell, intense scratching or head shaking, the ear feeling hot to touch = active infection, vet immediately. Never clean an infected ear with standard cleaner — it can push bacteria deeper.
The Malacetic Otic switch was recommended by our vet too after Epi-Otic wasn't sitting well. Different dogs respond to different formulations — worth asking for a sample before buying a full bottle.
Ask your vet about a drying agent for after swims or baths specifically for Caramel. Products like Otoflush have a drying component that removes residual moisture. In humid Mumbai/coastal climates this is especially important for Cockers.
We switched from Epi-Otic to an Australian brand (Malacetic Otic) on our vet's advice and our Cocker's reaction was much milder — she still doesn't love it but stopped the violent head shaking. Different formulations have different sensations. Ask your vet for a sample of an alternative.
Cocker grooming: make sure whoever grooms Caramel is plucking or thinning the hair inside the ear canal, not just trimming around it. Excess ear hair is a major moisture trap. A good groomer who knows Cockers will know to do this but always ask specifically.
Frequency maintenance for a Cocker prone to infections: weekly clean minimum in monsoon, every 10 days in winter. After every swim, after every bath — always check and if there's any moisture, clean immediately. Build it into the post-bath routine so you never forget.
