We have a 2-year-old Shih Tzu named Poppins in Mumbai. The humidity here is relentless almost 9 months of the year and she develops a mild "doggy smell" within 2-3 days of a bath.
Our groomer says once every 3 weeks is sufficient. Our vet says once a week is fine. Our mother-in-law says every 3 days (she is not a vet). We're confused.
Poppins doesn't seem to mind baths — she actually sits pretty calmly through them. We use a pet shampoo from Heads Up For Tails. But I've read that over-bathing strips the natural coat oils, especially for long-coated breeds. Is once a week too often for Mumbai's climate? And does the humidity mean the rules are different here compared to, say, Delhi?
In Mumbai specifically, once every 7-10 days is generally fine for a Shih Tzu with a well-moisturising shampoo and conditioner. The humidity concern is real but it goes both ways — humid climate means their skin doesn't dry out as badly as it would in Delhi, so more frequent bathing is tolerated better.
The key is using a good conditioner after every shampoo to replenish the oils. Just shampoo without conditioner for a long-coated breed is what causes the dry, brittle coat problem.
The conditioner point is so underrated. We were skipping it thinking it would make her coat oily and the result was exactly the dry, brittle coat problem you described. A good rinse-out conditioner changed everything.
Which conditioner brand do you use? We're in Pune and struggling to find something that actually detangles without weighing the coat down.
The smell after 2-3 days in Mumbai isn't from dirtiness — it's from the damp microenvironment the coat creates at that humidity level. Wiping her down with a damp cloth and drying thoroughly on days 2 and 3 after the bath can manage the smell without a full bath. Spot cleaning between baths extends the interval without the coat problems.
For Shih Tzus specifically, the beard and the area under the eyes need wiping every single day regardless of bath schedule — that area collects tears, food, and moisture which is where the smell primarily comes from. Daily beard cleaning makes a huge difference.
The beard cleaning tip is underrated! Even when we skip a bath, a quick wipe of Poppins' beard and eye area every morning keeps the smell completely manageable between baths.
We've had our Shih Tzu on once-a-week baths for 3 years in Hyderabad (nearly as humid as Mumbai) with absolutely no coat issues. The difference is we always follow up with a detangling conditioner spray and blow-dry fully. A damp coat left to air-dry is more damaging to a Shih Tzu than frequent bathing.
Also check that you're rinsing thoroughly — shampoo residue in that dense Shih Tzu coat is a very common cause of odour and mild skin irritation. Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Usually takes 2-3 more rinses than you think is needed.
Once a week with a quality shampoo + conditioner in Mumbai is the sweet spot in my experience with two Shih Tzus. Your groomer's once-every-three-weeks advice might be right for a dog in a dry climate but Mumbai is different. Trust your instincts and the vet here.
