We wanted Apple to be the first one through the door of our new house. That meant getting him from Pune to Delhi the right way. First AC, a coupe to ourselves, and one piece of advance planning that made the whole 27 hours work.
The little details that stay with you
A few recorded details from this journey, kept close to the original account and the moments the traveller chose to share.
We wanted Apple to be the first one through the door of our new house. That meant getting him from Pune to Delhi the right way. First AC, a coupe to ourselves, and one piece of advance planning that made the whole 27 hours work.
Getting a dog onto a First AC coupe is not something you improvise at the station. We had already booked the full coupe under one PNR, filed the written request with the Chief Reservation Officer, and had Apple's vaccination records and fitness certificate ready before we ever left for the platform. The coupe meant exactly what it promises, nobody else in that space, no negotiating with a stranger about whether a dog could share their berth.
Not long after we settled in, Apple and a Husky travelling in the next coupe over met in the shared lobby of the First AC coach. Two families, two dogs, both doing exactly what the rules require, full coupe each, and both ending up crossing paths anyway in the one shared space the compartment layout allows.
We had the railway thali that evening and it was genuinely good, warm, generous, the kind of meal that makes a long journey feel less like an ordeal. Apple had the run of the coupe while we ate, off-leash, completely at ease, doing what golden retrievers do best when given the space, sniffing every corner of somewhere new.
Both berths, one PNR. A shared compartment leaves your dog's presence subject to objection. A private coupe means no negotiation, no problems.
Visit the Chief Reservation Supervisor's office at your departure station. Submit a written request for coupe allocation. Do this well before departure, not on the day.
Not a week before. The luggage counter checks this. Some stations strictly enforce the 48-hour rule.
Download the app before your journey. Search your train. Note every halt of five minutes or more. These are your windows.
Some journeys happen because you plan a big trip. This one happened because we were moving into a new house and neither of us could imagine walking through that door without Apple leading the way. Twenty-seven hours, Pune to Hazrat Nizamuddin, First AC, just the three of us in a coupe built for two people and, as it turned out, one very happy dog who suddenly had an entire private compartment to enjoy off-leash.
