Hotel Katra Grand (Katra)

Hotel Katra Grand is one of the very few hotels in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, that openly welcomes dogs , a meaningful find in a pilgrimage town where most properties turn pets away at the door. Located on Railway Road, just a 6-minute walk from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station, this mid-range hotel puts you close to the base of the Vaishno Devi trek route while giving your dog a comfortable, air-conditioned room to return to. The property carries a 4.4 rating on TripAdvisor across 57 reviews, with room quality and cleanliness both scoring 4.9 , that's unusually high for a town where budget hotels dominate.

The Setting and Location

Katra is the gateway town to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, and it draws a steady stream of pilgrims year-round. Hotel Katra Grand sits on Railway Road, directly opposite Jammu and Kashmir Bank , easy to find if you're arriving by train. The hotel is 17 km from Bhairon Mandir, the hilltop Hindu temple that marks the end of the traditional Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route. For pet travellers, Katra itself is a dense, busy market town , not a nature retreat , but the surrounding landscape opens up quickly into forested mountain terrain, which means morning walks with your dog can genuinely lead somewhere interesting. The rooftop terrace at the property gives you elevated views without leaving the premises.

This is a practical base rather than a scenic retreat, but arriving with your dog in a town where most doors stay shut already puts Hotel Katra Grand in a different category from the competition. The on-site restaurant means you don't need to head out for every meal , useful if you'd rather not leave your dog alone in an unfamiliar room. Free parking is available, which matters if you've driven up from Jammu or beyond with your dog in the car.

Rooms and Amenities

Rooms at Hotel Katra Grand are described as warm and relaxed, with flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, kettles, and en suite wet rooms. Room service is available. For a mid-range hotel in Katra, this is a solid package , rooms score 4.9 on TripAdvisor, and the cleanliness rating matches, which is the detail that matters most when you're travelling with a dog. The hotel also lists a restaurant, free high-speed internet, free parking, a rooftop terrace, walking tours, car hire, foot massage, and airport shuttle. No pool is available, which is confirmed across multiple booking platforms.

The flexibility that regular guests have noted comes through in at least one verified review: a guest whose train arrived early , at 8:30 AM against a 9:00 AM check-in , found the room cleaned and ready ahead of schedule, with no additional charge. The reception team has also been noted for taking complaints seriously and responding promptly. These are small signals, but for a pet parent navigating an unfamiliar town, knowing the front desk is responsive matters.

What to Know Before You Visit

The pet policy permits dogs only , confirm this applies to your specific dog (size, breed) when you call, as the hotel has not published weight limits or breed restrictions online. Pet charges are currently unknown; the hotel should be able to quote a figure over the phone at 094191 04715. Because Katra is a pilgrimage town, the streets can get crowded , especially around the Ardhkuwari and Ban Ganga areas , so early morning walks with your dog are far more manageable than midday. The route up toward the Vaishno Devi base camp begins within walking distance of the hotel, but the trekking path itself does not permit dogs; plan your day accordingly and arrange for your dog to be settled at the hotel before you head up.

Travelling with a dog to a shrine town requires a bit more planning than a regular leisure trip, and Hotel Katra Grand makes that possible. Dogs allowed in Katra at a property this close to the railway station is genuinely useful for anyone combining a pilgrimage with a pet-friendly road trip through Jammu and Kashmir.
