Parvovirus is the number one killer of unvaccinated puppies in India. It is not rare. It is everywhere - in parks, markets, building compounds, anywhere dogs have ever walked. It survives in contaminated soil for over a year even in Indian heat. A puppy that has not completed its vaccination course can pick up Parvo from ground an infected dog walked on months ago.

The vaccine is part of the standard DHPPi course and costs ₹300–600. The ICU treatment for a Parvo-infected puppy costs ₹15,000–50,000 and still has a 25–40% mortality rate even with intervention. The math is not complicated.

What Is Parvovirus

Canine Parvovirus (CPV-2) is a highly contagious viral disease that targets rapidly dividing cells - primarily the intestinal lining and the bone marrow. It destroys the cells that line the intestines, breaking down the gut wall and allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream. It simultaneously suppresses the immune system by attacking the bone marrow.

The result: a puppy bleeding internally, unable to absorb nutrients or water, with a compromised immune system unable to fight back. Death from dehydration, sepsis, or cardiovascular failure typically occurs 48–72 hours after symptoms begin without treatment.

How Parvo Spreads in India

Parvovirus spreads through the faeces of infected dogs. Transmission occurs when a susceptible dog comes into contact with: contaminated ground or soil, infected dog faeces directly, contaminated objects (shoes, hands, water bowls), or other dogs who are infected but not yet showing symptoms.

The specific danger in India: the standard disinfectants (Dettol, Phenyl) do not kill Parvovirus. Only diluted bleach (1:30 concentration) reliably inactivates it.

Symptoms

Days 1–2: Sudden, severe lethargy, complete loss of appetite, fever, vomiting begins.

Days 2–4 (critical): Bloody diarrhoea with a distinctive, very unpleasant odour. Severe, rapid dehydration. Abdominal pain. Rapid weight loss. Inability to stand.

Any combination of lethargy + vomiting + bloody diarrhoea in a puppy under 6 months is a Parvo emergency. Go to a vet immediately. Do not wait to see if it improves. Do not try home remedies. Hours matter.

Vaccination: The Only Effective Answer

The Parvovirus vaccine (included in all DHPPi combinations) is highly effective - over 98% protection after the complete series. The reason puppies still die of Parvo despite vaccination existing is almost always incorrect timing: vaccination started too late, series not completed, or puppy exposed before immunity built.

The critical rule: Do not take your puppy to parks, markets, or anywhere other dogs go until 2 weeks after the 4th vaccine dose (which is at 16 weeks of age). This means approximately 18 weeks before outdoor socialisation in public spaces.
