Most Indian pet parents travel with their dog loose in the back seat, or held by a collar attached to a leash. Both are dangerous. In a sudden brake or accident, an unrestrained dog becomes a projectile - a 30 kg Labrador hits with roughly the same force as a 600 kg object at 50 km/h. Indian roads, with their potholes, speed bumps, and unpredictable traffic, make in-car restraint more important than most owners realise. A proper harness with a car tether is not optional equipment. It is basic safety.

Harness vs Collar - Why Collars Are Not Safe in Cars

A collar concentrates all restraint force on your dog's neck. In a sudden stop, this can cause serious tracheal or spinal injury. A harness distributes force across the chest, shoulders, and back - the parts of the body designed to handle it. For car travel, always use a harness, not a collar.

Additionally, a collar gives your dog full freedom of movement in the back seat. They can jump to the front, block the driver's view, or interfere with the gear shift. A harness with a car tether keeps them in one zone without restricting breathing or comfort.

The Two Things You Need

1. A well-fitted body harness - not a collar, not a head halter. A chest-and-back harness with a solid clip point on the back (not the front).

2. A car tether - a short bungee-style connector that clips from the harness to the seat belt buckle or headrest anchor. This is sold separately from the harness and is the piece most Indian pet parents skip. Do not skip it.

Sizing Your Dog's Harness

Measure your dog's chest girth - the widest point around the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Add 2-3 cm for a comfortable fit. If your dog is between sizes, go up. A too-tight harness restricts breathing; a too-loose harness can be escaped.

For Indian breeds and common dogs:

Indie dogs (15-25 kg): Most fall in Medium or Large harness sizes. Measure individually - Indies vary widely in build.
