"How to book a train ticket for a dog online" is one of the most-searched pet-travel questions in India right now, and most of the answers are outdated or incomplete. Here is the real, current process - which class actually allows it, how booking online intersects with an in-person step you cannot skip, what it costs, and a genuinely new development (the Vande Bharat Sleeper pet box) that most guides still haven't caught up to.

Which train classes actually allow dogs?

The one rule that matters most

Dogs and cats are allowed in exactly two places on an Indian train: a fully-booked First AC (1A) coupe or cabin, where they travel with you, or the Brake/Luggage Van as registered parcel cargo, where they travel separately and you don't accompany them. There is no version of this where your dog rides with you in Sleeper, 2AC, 3AC, AC Chair Car, or General - no exceptions, regardless of size or carrier.

Booking your dog in a First AC coupe - the actual steps

Book your own confirmed First AC ticket first. Not waitlisted, not RAC - a confirmed 1A ticket is the prerequisite for everything else. IRCTC has been rolling out online pet-booking integration for the 1A coupe option, but availability varies by route, so confirm at booking.
Request full coupe allotment. Submit a request to the Chief Reservation Officer (CRO) at your boarding station, mentioning explicitly that you're travelling with a dog or cat. A full 2-berth or 4-berth coupe needs to be allotted to you alone - coupe allotment isn't automatic and depends on availability.
Pay pet carriage charges at the parcel office. Even with a confirmed 1A ticket, you still need to visit the parcel/luggage office at your departure station to finalise the pet booking and pay the carriage charge - this in-person step has not gone away even as online booking expands.
Arrive at least 3 hours early. This is non-negotiable regardless of how far in advance you booked online.

The Brake Van alternative

If a First AC coupe isn't available or affordable, pets can travel as registered parcel luggage in the Brake/Luggage Van instead. You do not accompany your pet in this option - they travel in a well-ventilated cage or crate that you provide, handled separately from passenger coaches. This is workable for a calm, crate-trained dog on a planned route, but we wouldn't recommend it for a nervous or first-time traveller - there's no one checking on them mid-journey.

What it actually costs

Real numbers

Indian Railways charges pet carriage by weight, generally around ₹30 per kilogram of the animal's body weight, which in practice works out to roughly ₹300–2,000 depending on your dog's weight and the distance travelled. GST applies on top. This is separate from - and usually far cheaper than - your own 1A AC fare, which is the larger cost in most cases.

An up-to-date vaccination certificate, including rabies
A fitness-to-travel certificate from a registered vet, typically required within 24–48 hours of departure

Large breeds - German Shepherds, Labradors, Rottweilers, Great Danes, and similarly-sized dogs - are required to wear a muzzle under railway rules. If your dog has never worn one, practice at home well before travel day; the station platform is the wrong place for a first try.

Does Vande Bharat allow pets? The real, current answer

It depends which Vande Bharat you mean

Regular Vande Bharat trains are chair-car only - no First AC coupe exists on those rakes, so the standard pet rule simply has nowhere to apply, and pets cannot travel on them. But the newer Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, launched in early 2026, introduced a dedicated pet box facility - a fixed, ventilated metal enclosure near the locomotive at each end of the rake, separate from passenger seating. This is genuinely new and most existing guides haven't updated for it.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper pet box has its own quirks worth knowing before you plan around it: booking is only available in person at the parcel counter (no online option as of mid-2026), only one pet box per PNR is allowed, charges are non-refundable even if the train is delayed or cancelled, the facility isn't available on every route, and - importantly - Indian Railways hasn't officially confirmed whether the pet box area is climate-controlled. Confirm directly with the station before relying on it for a long or hot-weather journey.

Can I book a dog's train ticket online through IRCTC?

Partially. Online booking for the First AC coupe option is being rolled out, but the pet carriage charge and final confirmation still require an in-person visit to the parcel office at your departure station. Brake Van bookings are parcel-office-only, with no online component at all.

Is a dog allowed in Sleeper class if it's small and in a bag?

No. The rule is about class, not size - pets are only permitted in a fully-booked First AC coupe or the Brake Van, regardless of how small the dog is.
