Rishikesh is not the obvious choice for a dog trip. It is densely spiritual, moderately crowded, and the famous suspension bridges require careful management with dogs. And yet - the Ganga, in the early morning, at a riverside property outside the main market area, with shallow bank access and no crowds - is among the best things any water-loving dog can experience.

Apple's 40 minutes in the Ganga at 6:45 AM during our February 2026 trip was one of the most beautiful things we have watched. This guide tells you how to have that experience with your dog.

Getting There from Delhi/NCR

Distance: 250 km from Gurugram / 230 km from Delhi
Drive time: 5 hours standard, 4 hours night drive
Route: NH44 → Murthal → Muzaffarnagar → Haridwar → Rishikesh
Best approach: Leave at 10 PM, arrive by 3 AM. One stop at Murthal (94 km).

Where to Stay: The Critical Decision

Where you stay in Rishikesh determines whether your dog has a good experience or not. The key variable: Ganga access.

Best stay type: Riverside properties in the Tapovan or Swargashram area. These are away from the main bazaar noise and have private or semi-private river access.

What to ask specifically: "Do you have private access to the Ganga for dogs?" Private steps or a private path to the river means early morning swimming without crowds.

The Ganga with Dogs: What You Need to Know

When it is safe: October to March, early morning (before 8 AM), at shallow bank sections near private riverside properties. The water is clear, cold, and slow enough at the edges for dogs to wade and swim safely.

When it is not safe: July to September (monsoon) - the river rises dramatically, current becomes extremely dangerous. Never let dogs into the Ganga in monsoon months.

The famous suspension bridge is doable with dogs. We walked all three across during our trip. Always keep a very firm grip on the leash - the bridge is narrow, there are monkeys, and the bridge sways. Go at off-peak hours (early morning or after 7 PM). Watch for monkeys specifically - they will engage with dogs.

Little Buddha Cafe, Tapovan: Outdoor terrace with river views, dogs fully welcome. Best breakfast in Rishikesh - arrive before 9 AM for a good outdoor table.
