Most Indian pet parents travel with their dog loose in the back seat, or held by a collar attached to a leash. Both are dangerous. In a sudden brake or accident, an unrestrained dog becomes a projectile - a 30 kg Labrador hits with roughly the same force as a 600 kg object at 50 km/h. Indian roads, with their potholes, speed bumps, and unpredictable traffic, make in-car restraint more important than most owners realise. A proper harness with a car tether is not optional equipment. It is basic safety.

Harness vs Collar - Why Collars Are Not Safe in Cars

A collar concentrates all restraint force on your dog's neck. In a sudden stop, this can cause serious tracheal or spinal injury. A harness distributes force across the chest, shoulders, and back - the parts of the body designed to handle it. For car travel, always use a harness, not a collar.

Additionally, a collar gives your dog full freedom of movement in the back seat. They can jump to the front, block the driver's view, or interfere with the gear shift. A harness with a car tether keeps them in one zone without restricting breathing or comfort.

The Two Things You Need

1. A well-fitted body harness - not a collar, not a head halter. A chest-and-back harness with a solid clip point on the back (not the front).

2. A car tether - a short bungee-style connector that clips from the harness to the seat belt buckle or headrest anchor. This is sold separately from the harness and is the piece most Indian pet parents skip. Do not skip it.

The tether length matters: too long and the dog can still reach the front seat; too short and they cannot shift positions comfortably. A 30-60 cm bungee tether is the practical range for most dogs.

Sizing Your Dog's Harness

Measure your dog's chest girth - the widest point around the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Add 2-3 cm for a comfortable fit. If your dog is between sizes, go up. A too-tight harness restricts breathing; a too-loose harness can be escaped.

For Indian breeds and common dogs:

Indie dogs (15-25 kg): Most fall in Medium or Large harness sizes. Measure individually - Indies vary widely in build.

Golden Retrievers, Labradors (25-35 kg): Large to Extra-Large. Julius-K9 and Ruffwear both have good options in this range.

For road trips, carry two leashes: a standard 4-6 foot everyday leash for walks at stops, and a longer 2-3 metre training leash for stretches and proper breaks. Keep both accessible, not buried in the boot.

Retractable leashes are not recommended for highway rest stops. They give the dog too much freedom around traffic and are harder to control quickly. A standard fixed-length leash gives you proper control.

Getting Your Dog Comfortable with the Harness Before the Trip

Do not put a new harness on your dog for the first time on departure day. Introduce it at home, at least a week before travel. Put it on for 10-15 minutes, treat heavily, take it off. Build up to a full walk with the harness. By the time you get in the car, the harness should feel completely normal.
