Let us be clear from the start: no hotel, resort, homestay, or any other accommodation in India has a legal basis to require a breed certificate or Kennel Club of India (KCI) registration as a condition of allowing your dog to stay. It is not a legal requirement. It is not an industry standard. It is a misunderstanding.

Why the Myth Exists

1. Confusion with vaccination certificates. Responsible properties ask for proof of current vaccination. Somewhere along the way, "certificate from a vet" became "breed certificate" in the retelling.

2. KCI registration as a proxy for "legitimate" pet ownership. Some properties have asked for KCI papers as a way of assessing whether the dog is "well-bred" and therefore presumed to be well-behaved. This logic is flawed and legally baseless.

3. Indie dogs and the "mongrel problem." In some cases, breed certificate requirements are specifically designed to exclude indie dogs from stays that officially allow pets. It is a form of breed discrimination that has no basis in law.

What You Actually Need

Vaccination certificate from a registered veterinarian showing current rabies vaccination and current DHPPi vaccination
The certificate should include the vet's name, clinic name, registration number, and stamp
A physical copy in your bag and a digital copy on your phone

That is it. Breed irrelevant. KCI registration irrelevant. Papers irrelevant.

What to Say If a Property Asks for Breed Certificate

"We have a current vaccination certificate from our registered veterinarian showing rabies and DHPPi vaccinations. Breed registration certificates are not a standard requirement for pet-friendly stays. Is the vaccination certificate sufficient for your records?"

A Note for Indie Dog Parents Specifically

Captain is an indie dog. He has stayed at pet-friendly properties across North India without any documentation other than his vaccination certificate. The Tails Verified listings on PetFriendlyPlaces.in explicitly welcome indie dogs.
