Captain came to us from a street in Gurugram. He was thin, cautious, and had the street-dog wariness that takes months to fully shed. Apple came from a responsible breeder - golden, confident, and immediately certain that every human she met was her friend. Three years later, they share the same car, the same resorts, the same rivers, and the same level of love. But they are not the same dog.

Health: Where Indie Dogs Have a Real Advantage

Indie dogs are the product of thousands of years of natural selection in the Indian subcontinent. They have not been bred for aesthetics. They have been bred, by survival, to resist the diseases common in India.

Generally stronger immune systems than many imported breeds
Better heat tolerance - their body structure is optimised for Indian climate
Lower incidence of genetic disorders common in some pedigree breeds
Faster recovery from routine illnesses

Temperament: The Reality Beyond Breed Stereotypes

Breed dogs: predictable temperament profiles based on what they were bred for. Golden retrievers are social, food-motivated, and emotionally expressive.

Indie dogs: variable temperament based on individual history. Street-origin dogs often carry anxiety, fear-reactivity to specific triggers, and a self-sufficiency that can read as aloofness. Captain took 8 months to fully trust strangers. This is not a defect - it is the appropriate response of an animal that learned to be cautious to survive.

Travel: Both Do Well, But Differently

Apple in new environments: Immediately comfortable. Walks into a new hotel room and owns it. Enters the Ganga and swims without hesitation.

Captain in new environments: Assesses first. Walks the perimeter. Identifies exit routes. Once satisfied that a place is safe, settles into full Nawab mode with remarkable completeness.

For travel with indie dogs: Give them time at every new location before asking them to engage. The first hour in a new place belongs to them.

Training: Who Is Easier

Breed dogs with working histories respond faster to structured training. Apple learned sit, stay, and recall in two weeks.

Indie dogs learn just as thoroughly but often on their own timeline. Training an indie dog is a longer project that produces genuine partnership rather than obedience.

The Adoption Question

India has millions of healthy, intelligent, loving dogs in shelters and on streets. Indie dogs in India are supremely adapted to Indian life. If you are considering a dog and live in India, adopting an indie dog is the option we would choose again without hesitation.

Living with Both: What We Have Learned

Apple's immediate warmth makes Captain's gradually earned trust more meaningful. Captain's independence makes Apple's constant desire for connection more touching. Apple shows Captain that humans are safe. Captain shows Apple that sniffing a bush thoroughly is actually worth doing.
