We have driven to Jim Corbett, Rishikesh, Bhimtal, Chail, and back - with three dogs, a Rubicon, and enough miles to know exactly what you need and what you do not. This is not a theoretical packing list. This is what actually goes into the boot every time we leave Gurgaon with Apple, Captain, and Kimchi.
Safety First - Restraint in the Car
Every dog needs: a well-fitted body harness + a car tether that clips the harness to the seat belt system. We use Julius-K9 for Apple (our 5-year-old male Golden Retriever) and HUFT harnesses for Captain and Kimchi, all with bungee tethers to the rear headrest anchors. No dog reaches the front seat while the car is moving.

Food and Water
Our food kit contains: an airtight container of regular kibble (Royal Canin for Apple, Drools Focus for Captain and Kimchi), a small pouch of Chip Chops treats accessible from the front seat, 2-3 bully sticks for long stretches, 3 single-serve wet food pouches for arrival rewards, collapsible bowls, and 5 litres of water in a dedicated jerry can.

Leashes and Walking Gear
Carry two leashes per dog: a standard 4-6 foot everyday leash for petrol station and dhaba stops, and a longer training leash for proper rest breaks. Keep at least one accessible from the front seat, not buried in the boot. We carry a dedicated leash hook near the rear door so leashes are reachable the moment we stop.
At every stop of more than 5 minutes, every dog gets out, walks, waters, and relieves themselves. This is not negotiable on a 6+ hour drive. We stop at Village Food Courts on the EPE (35 km from Gurgaon) and Kundan's in Gajraula (120 km) on every northeast route - both have space for dogs to properly stretch.
Health and First Aid
Cleaning and Hygiene
After river access at Kosi or Sattal Lake, after a forest walk at Emerald Trail, after any outdoor adventure - your dogs need cleaning before getting back in the car and back in the room.

Mental Stimulation for Long Drives
A bored dog in the back seat becomes a restless dog, which becomes a disruptive dog. Especially on the 2-3 hour stretch between Delhi and the hills where there is not much to see and the car is just moving.

What We Leave Behind
Things Indian pet parents pack that are usually unnecessary: a full dog crate (takes too much space unless your dog is crate-trained and anxious without it), a separate dog first aid kit bag (a ziplock in the glove box is sufficient), multiple toys (one favourite is enough), and fresh food that requires refrigeration (too complicated on the road).

For every route north or northeast from Delhi, stop at Village Food Courts on the EPE (35 km, first proper stop out of city traffic) and Kundan's in Gajraula (120 km, halfway point). Both have outdoor space for dogs to stretch and relieve themselves. Both are Tails Verified.
