Mumbai's oldest animal welfare institution predates every organisation covered in this series so far β the Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1874, more than a decade before Bengaluru's oldest body and more than a century before most of the newer NGOs on this list. What follows is a working map of who does what across the city.
Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals (BSDPHA, formerly Bombay SPCA)
Founded in 1874, this is Mumbai's oldest animal welfare institution and one of the oldest in India. Formally renamed in April 2021 (still widely known as Bombay SPCA or BSPCA), the hospital in Parel receives no government funding and runs entirely on donations and modest service fees. Facilities include dog, cat, horse, and cattle wards, an aviary for sick and injured birds, animal ambulances, X-ray capability, and a full sterilisation program β treating over 11,000 animals a year.

WSD β The Welfare of Stray Dogs
Registered in 1985 specifically to stop mass culling of street dogs by Mumbai's municipal corporation, WSD has run active sterilisation, vaccination, rescue, and medical care programs since 1994. Their free OPD clinic at Sewri treats everything from wounds and skin conditions to kidney problems, and their field team treats roughly 15,000 injured or sick street animals a year within the animal's own territory β a genuinely different model from bringing every case into a central shelter.

RAWW β Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare
Worth including for the same reason ARRC matters in Bengaluru: RAWW is Mumbai's dedicated wildlife specialist, not a dog/cat shelter. Started in 2013 by student volunteers under founder Pawan Sharma, RAWW is an entirely volunteer-run rescue network operating across Mulund, Chembur, Palghar, and Thane with two dedicated wildlife ambulances, handling snakes, birds, and other urban wildlife in coordination with the Forest Department, police, and municipal authorities. For a wild animal in distress β not a street dog or cat β this is the more appropriate call than a general shelter.

Other organisations active in Mumbai
World For All Animal Care & Adoptions, based in Andheri East, has revolutionised the local adoption model since 2009 β running over 320 adoptions annually alongside rescue and sterilisation work, with over 12,000 rescues and 7,500 adoptions to date. YODA (Youth Organisation in Defence of Animals), based in Khar West, runs a structured R3 programme (Rescue, Rehab, Release or Rehome) with a 25-day target turnaround, alongside an active ABC sterilisation programme. Thane CPCA (Thane Community for the Protection and Care of Animals β formerly Thane SPCA, a rename over time not a separate organisation) runs a full animal hospital and rescue service in Kolshet Road, Thane West. PFA Mumbai remains a genuine open gap in this piece: two separate research attempts produced only unverifiable aggregator listings with conflicting numbers and no primary-source confirmation.

Where can I adopt a dog in Mumbai?
WSD runs an actively screened adoption program with a formal interview process, and BSDPHA's adoption line (+91 87796 90135) handles adoptions from their hospital as well.
Is Bombay SPCA still called that?
Officially it became the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals in April 2021, though it's still widely referred to as Bombay SPCA or BSPCA.
